abstract:

    line_1:        This program will study the interstellar gas and dust in external galaxies via
    line_2:        UV absorption lines superposed on the spectra of background stars and QSOs.
    line_3:        First, we shall observe several early-type supergiants in M31, having a range
    line_4:        in reddening and galactocentric distance: the properties of the dust and gas in
    line_5:        M31 will be derived, as well as intrinsic properties of the stars. Second, we
    line_6:        shall observe several QSOs behind NGC253 and Fornax whose sight-lines
    line_7:        probe the outer disks and halos of these galaxies: the column density and
    line_8:        extent of absorbing gas will be determined. Finally we shall study several QSOs
    line_9:        situated near intervening galaxies whose spectra are already known to show
    line_10:       galaxian CaII or NaI. Depending on our target we shall use either the FOS
    line_11:       or FOC f/48 spectrograph.
