abstract:

line_1: It is proposed to take advantage of the high angular resolution and UV response
line_2: of the Faint Object Camera to study the young massive stellar population in
line_3: giant extragalactic HII regions. This will, in turn, enable to determine the
line_4: upper Initial Mass Function in conditions different from those in the solar
line_5: neighborhood. Three HII regions, NGC 604 and NGC 595 in the galaxy M33, NGC
line_6: 5471 in the galaxy M 101 have been selected for observations at the f/96 mode.
line_7: Three filters, including one in the far UV, are required for each target.

  question: 3
    section: 1
line_1: Observations at high angular resolution (F/96) through three filters (F165W,
line_2: F342W and F437M) in order to build a color-magnitude diagram for the brightest
line_3: stars and to have a first evaluation of dust extinction. The filter F437M is
line_4: used to get a near B flux while avoiding H-beta.
    line_6: Four targets: NGC 604 (2 positions)
    line_7: NGC 595
    line_8: NGC 5471
line_10: The respective exposure times are based on the detection and resolution of
    line_11: stars down to M_v = -2 (NGC 604 - position 1), M_v = -1 (NGC 604 - position 2
    line_12: and NGC 595), M_v = -5 (NGC 5471).
line_14: In one case, two exposures are duplicated with additional neutral density
line_15: filters in order to calibrate the photometry of overexposed images.

  question: 4
    section: 1
line_1: The HST will enable to study the massive stars of giant extragalactic HII
line_2: regions in which ground-based observations are definitively limited by the
line_3: stellar crowding. The best angular resolution which is provided by the FOC, is
line_4: needed and the UV spectral range improves the selection of hot massive stars.
