These galaxies are photometrically and line_3: morphology distinct from the giant ellipticals which host most 5C radio surces, line_4: and they are tentatively identified low red-shift, late-type spiral galaxies line_5: hosting radio sources of order 1,000 x more radio luminous than those in normal line_6: spiral galaxies. line_8: The aim of these observations is detection of spiral structure in the galaxies line_9: and the form of their apparent interaction with neighbours. At the redshift line_10: ~0.2 estimated from their apparent magnitude, they are viewed at a scale of ~5 line_11: kpc arcsec-1 and direct imaging from the ground cannot reveal the presence of line_12: spiral arms. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: GRUEFF fname: G. inst: BOLOGNA, UNIVERSITY OF country: ITALY esa: X ! lname: VIGOTTI fname: M. inst: BOLOGNA, UNIVERSITY OF country: ITALY esa: X ! lname: BENN fname: C. mi: R. inst: BRAIN AND PERCEPTION LABORATORY country: UNITED KINGDOM esa: X ! lname: WALL fname: JASPER mi: V. inst: ROYAL GREENWICH OBSERVATORY country: UNITED KINGDOM esa: X ! lname: BOKSENBERG fname: ALEC inst: ROYAL GREENWICH OBSERVATORY country: UNITED KINGDOM esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We propose to observe three of the 5C12 S galaxies through U filter (F 342W) in line_2: f/96 mode, using a 512 x 512 format. Dark sky is required, in order to have line_3: reasonable signal to noise on low surface brightness structure. Photography from space is required and we line_5: propose to image three S-galaxies with Space Telescope. In order to maximise line_6: the visibility of the arms of the galaxy over the background, imaging will be line_7: carried out through U filter. At these short wavelengths, the faint-object line_8: camera is preferable to the wide-field camera. line_10: Assuming a central surface brightness for spiral galaxies of m = 21.5 mag line_11: arcsec -2 and an e- folding scale of 5 kpc, then a 2000s exposure through a line_12: U(u) filter will give a signal to noise of 6 for the following radius - element line_13: size combination: line_15: radius on galaxy image image convolved to element size line_16: kpc kpc arcsec line_17: 0 0.2 0.04 line_18: 5 0.6 0.1 line_19: 10 0.6 0.3 line_20: If spiral arms are present, they should thus be clearly visible in the inner line_21: parts of the galaxies. The 11-arcsec field should also allow us to observe any line_22: details of close interaction between galaxies, blurred by seeing for ground line_23: observations. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: None ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Analysis will be carried out at the RGO STARLINK node if appropriate line_2: software is available.
