Does it form stars or line_2: is it accreted by a massive object and fuels an active nucleus? line_4: To answer these questions we propose to observe the nearby normal elliptical line_5: NGC 4278 in which the neutral and ionized gas have been extensively studied. line_7: We propose to search for and count massive hot stars recently formed from the line_8: accumulated gas within 3 arc sec of the center by taking a direct image with line_9: the filter F275W which combines high efficiency of FOC and high contrast of hot line_10: stars against galaxy background. line_12: We propose to take two long slit spectra in the first order which will give the line_13: velocity field, the velocity dispersion, the line intensity ratios line_14: [OII] lambda3727/[OIII]lambda5007/H-beta in the gas as a function of line_15: distance from center and a detection of or a significant upper limit to the line_16: broad component of H-beta indicative of an (intrinsically weak) Seyfert line_17: nucleus. The long slit spectra will be taken perpendicular to and along the line_18: axis of rotation of the ionized gas within 8 arcsec from center (P.A.=40D +/- line_19: 10D; P.A.=130D +/- 10D) which we have determined from the ground. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BUTCHER fname: H. inst: GRONINGEN, UNIVERSITY OF country: NETHERLANDS esa: X ! lname: BOKSENBERG fname: ALEC inst: ROYAL GREENWICH OBSERVATORY country: UNITED KINGDOM esa: X ! lname: DEMOULIN-ULRICH fname: MARIE-HELENE inst: EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY country: GERMANY, WEST esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: a)Detection of hot stars formed from accumulated gas within 3 arc sec from line_2: center: line_3: 1 exposure set through filter F275W for best contrast of hot stars against line_4: galaxy background, and high efficiency of FOC. line_6: 1 exposure set through filter F502M to separate hot stars from globular line_7: clusters and foreground stars. line_9: b)Long slit spectra (order 1) covering [OII] Lambda3727 and line_10: [OIII]Lambda5007 to investigate the velocity field, line width, line line_11: ratios. line_12: 2 exposures sets: perpendicular to and along rotation axis of gas as obtained line_13: from ground based observations (P.A.=40d+/-10d; P.A.=130d+/-10d). line_15: c)Mapping of the ioized gas in the most intense emission line: [OII]Lambda line_16: 3727 line_17: 1 exposure though medium band filter F372M. ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: (cont'd from EL # 2) line_3: orient 100d +/- 10d is equally good. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: On direct plates which we have taken in B with the CFH Telescope we cannot line_2: detect stars fainter than m(B)=24 within ~4 arc sec from the nucleus. The aim line_3: of the present ST proposal is to search and count stars with m(B)=26 to 28 in line_4: the same area. line_6: The distribution of the gas and the velocity field have already been obtained line_7: with the best angular resolution from the ground. It is important to obtain line_8: observations closer to the center and with higher angular resolution in order line_9: to distinguish between rotation, chaotic and inflow motion of the gas. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The institutions to which we are affiliated are well outfitted in hardware (Vax line_2: computers)as well as software for data reduction and analysis. The data will be line_3: reduced and analysed in at least two institutions. The interpretation will be line_4: done as a group. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Our institutions will fully support us and have the sofware and hardware line_2: appropriate for reduction and analysis of ST data. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Imaging and spectroscopy of the central region of the elliptical galaxy NGC line_2: 4278 with the following aims: line_4: - search for and count massive hot stars recently formed from accumulated line_5: gas at center. Deep images will be taken at 2700 A and 5200 A with FOC/96. line_6: - determination of the velocity field of the gas from 2 long slit spectra line_7: with FOC/48 and grating in 1st order. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BOKSENBERG fname: ALEC title: PROF. category: PI inst: ROYAL GREENWICH OBSERVATORY addr_1: MADINGLEY ROAD addr_2: CB3 0EZ city: CAMBRIDGE country: UNITED KINGDOM phone: (44) 223 374000 telex: 817235 ! lname: DEMOULIN-ULRICH fname: MARIE-HELENE category: CON inst: EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY addr_1: KARL-SCHWARZSCHILDSTRASSE, 2 addr_2: D-8046 city: GARCHING BEI MUNCHEN country: GERMANY, WEST phone: (89) 32006-232 telex: 52828222 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC4278 descr_1: NEARBY ELLIPTICAL GALAXY pos_1: RA=12H 17M 36.2S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC=+29D 33' 28.04" +/- 0.2" equinox: 1950 pm_or_par: N rv_or_z: V=600 acqpr_1: EXT plate_req: N plate_avail: N comment_1: GASP POSITION fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=11.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(2750)=4 +/- 2E-19 fluxnum_3: 3 fluxval_3: F-CONT(2750)=5 +/- 1E-19 fluxnum_4: 4 fluxval_4: F-LINE(5007)=1.5 +/- 0.5E-14 fluxnum_5: 5 fluxval_5: F-LINE(3727)=4.9 +/- 1.6E-14 ! ! end of fixed targets !
