Two SO galaxies NGC line_4: 5102 and MGC 3115, at reasonable distance and with very different gas contents, line_5: have been selected. Observations through several filters (especially a far UV line_6: filter) will allow to resolve and study the massive stars, if they exist. The line_7: UV surface brightness of the unresolved background will be measured and will line_8: set constraints on the characteristics of hot evolved stars. A spectrum of the line_9: nucleus of NGC 5102 will allow to search for any evidence of nuclear activity line_10: which may contribute to the UV flux. ! ! end of abstract ! No general_form_proposers block records found general_form_text: question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The high spatial resolution of the FOC will provide the possibility to resolve line_2: the young and massive stars, if they exist, in two examples of relatively line_3: nearby elliptical-type poulation. This capability is further improved by the line_4: good response of the FOC in the ultra-violet. At these wavelengths, the line_5: contrast of young and hot stars would be enhanced against the contribution of line_6: the main-sequence and giant-branch components of the old stellar population. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Data analysis capabilities (VAX) line_2: research assistance ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: It is proposed to study th origin of the UV flux in elliptical-type population line_2: and to determine the respective contribution from young stars and from hot line_3: stars commonly occurring in an old stellar population.
