abstract:

    line_1:        It is proposed to use the HST/FOC to obtain images, at ultraviolet and optical
    line_2:        wavelengths, of the continuum jet in the BL Lac/radio elliptical galaxy PKS
    line_3:        0521-36. The source is remarkable in showing diametrically opposite
    line_4:        asymmetries at optical and radio wavelengths and may provide the best available
    line_5:        opportunity to study collimated jets very close to the line of sight the same
    line_6:        exposure will contain images of the blue nucleus of the galaxy. The linear
    line_7:        spatial resolution provided by the FOC will be equivalent to that obtained on
    line_8:        the M87 jet with ground-based observations.

    line_1:        Optical and ultraviolet imaging at 5500A and 2200A is planned. At both
    line_2:        wavelengths a short exposure of a small area centered on the bright, variable
    line_3:        nucleus is done to obtain a reliable estimate of its brightness. This followed
    line_4:        at both wavelengths by imaging of an extended region, with a lower dynamic
    line_5:        range, which covers the nucleus and the jet.

    line_1:        Our available ground-based optical and UV satellite data are of limited value
    line_2:        for the study of this object. With the IUE only the nucleus can be seen and
    line_3:        the jet is at present not detectable in the ultraviolet. Ground-based data
    line_4:        suffer a lack of resolution which again is particularly troublesome for studies
    line_5:        of the jet.
