This phenomenon may be a line_3: precursor to more dramatic activity powered by the evolutionary endproducts of line_4: millions of high mass stars. Multiband images obtained with the Wide Field line_5: Camera will be used to invesitgate the location, size, structure, colors and line_6: luminosity of the starburst region. Ultraviolet spectroscopy with the High line_7: Resolution Spectrograph will provide direct insight into the nature of the hot line_8: stars. Interstellar gas in the target galaxy, and in or near the Milky Way line_9: will be probed by high resolution observations of selected absorption lines. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BALZANO fname: VICKI inst: COMPUTER SCIENCE CORPORATION country: USA ! lname: EBBETS fname: DENNIS mi: C. inst: BALL AEROSPACE CORPORATION country: USA ! lname: SHARA fname: MIKE inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The Wide Field camera will be used to obtain narrow band imagery of the line_2: galaxies. All will fit comfortably within the field of view. Filters will line_3: include an ultraviolet bandpass, U, B, V and R, and a narrow H Alpha line_4: filter selected to match the redshift of the galaxy. We expect 6 images per line_5: galaxy. We estimate that the individual exposure times will be short, on the line_6: order of a minute or less. Since we do not expect to obtain HRS spectroscopy line_7: of all of the targets, we are proposing an additional image with WFC objective line_8: grating, to give at least crude spectroscopic information about all galaxies. line_10: Two of the brighter and more interesting galaxies will be observed with the line_11: HRS. Grating G140L will be used to obtain spectra between 1200 and 1800 A, line_12: with a resolving power of approximately 2000, and a signal to noise ratio of line_13: 25. The interstellar lines of FeII and MnII near 2600A will be observed with line_14: Grating G270M, at a spectral resolution of 20000. line_19: Cycle 0: Exposure 12 1.8 hours priority=3 line_20: Cycle 1: Exposures 13-21, 32 2.9 hours priority=2,3 line_21: Cycle 2: Exposures 40-48 2.34 hours priority=2 line_22: Cycle 3: Exposures TBD 0.34 hours priority=2,3 line_23: total = 7.38 hours ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: We have obtained and studied IUE spectra of 13 starburst galaxies, including line_2: several included in this proposal. UV fluxes have been measured to assist with line_3: exposure time estimates. The galaxies are near the limit of feasibility with line_4: IUE, and the spectral line features, both stellar and interstellar, while line_5: clearly present, are difficult to interpret in detail. HRS will provide vastly line_6: improved resolution and signal to noise ratio in a fraction of the IUE line_7: observing time. We have also obtained CCD images from Kitt Peak and Mauna Kea. line_8: Although we have many images, both observing runs were hampered by medicore line_9: sky conditions. The spatial resolution and photometric precision expected from line_10: WFC images will allow much more confident analysis of the size, morphlogy, line_11: colors and luminosity of the starburst regions. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: We wish to obtain and analyze the WFC images several months before spectroscopy line_2: with the HRS is scheduled. Precise locations of selected nuclear regions will line_3: be measured with respet to a nearby offset star for HRS target acquisitions. line_4: Detailed planning of exposure times and target acq. prarmeters will also be line_5: based on examination of the images. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The WFC images will be calibrated and reduced using standard RSDP and SDAS line_2: procedure. We will depend on the Institute facilities for all mage processing line_3: requirements. The starburst regions will be analyzed in terms of location in line_4: the galaxy, size, colors, luminosity, morphology and interaction with other line_5: regions (neighboring galaxies?). The broad band R and narrow band H Alpha line_6: images will be scaled and differenced to highlight nebular regions emitting line_7: strongly in emission lines. These will serve as tracers of the ionized gas. line_8: The ultraviolet images will directly show the location of hot stars. (We will line_9: need to discuss with a host scientist the severity of the red leak problem with line_10: regards to these plans). line_12: The HRS spectra will be reduced by either ScI or IDT facilities. Continuum line_13: fluxes, ultraviolet luminosity, and stellar emission and absorption lines will line_14: be studied. Photospheric and stellar wind line will be used as diagnostics of line_15: the population of hot stars. The higher resolution interstellar lines will be line_16: analyzed to obtain information about interstellar gas in the target galaxy, and line_17: in ornear our Milky Way. ! question: 12 section: 1 line_1: Prerequisite SV tests: line_2: HRS-05.3 Mode II Target Acquisition - offset (or verification of non flight line_3: s/w offset capability) line_4: HRS-08 HRS Low Resolution Calibration ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: The star formation regions in galaxies with starburst nuclei will be studied line_2: with narrow band imagery obtained with the Wide Field Camera, and ultraviolet line_3: spectroscoy observed with the High Resolution Spectrograph. Images will be line_4: obtained in the Ultraviolet, in standard U, B, V and R band passes, and through line_5: appropriate H Alpha filters. Spectroscopy with a resolving power near 2000 and line_6: signal to noise ratio of 25 will be obtained in the 1200 to 1800A region. The line_7: size, morphology, environment, stellar content and luminosity of the starburst line_8: regions will be studied. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: EBBETS fname: DENNIS mi: C. title: DR. category: PI inst: BALL AEROSPACE SYSTEMS DIVISION addr_1: HRS PROJECT AR1 addr_2: P.O.
