The observations will be taken as line_4: a series at three wavelengths and the series will be taken line_5: separated in time to give different sides of Pluto and positions of the line_6: satellite in its orbit for accurate orbital characteristics. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: A satellite of Pluto has been discovered based on the periodic change of the line_2: blended image of the planet and its satellite. This discovery has been line_3: confirmed by speckle observations. line_5: Photometric observations, prior to the discovery of the satellite, had line_6: indicated periodic changes in the light curve for Pluto. Based on current line_7: knowledge about the relative sizes of Pluto and its satellite, the light curve line_8: variations cannot be explained by the satellite alone. Thus, there apparently line_9: exist intensity variations on the surface of Pluto. line_11: Due to the small separation between the primary and the satellite, photographic line_12: separation of the images cannot be achieved from the ground. Separation of the line_13: images can be achieved with the planetary camera. line_15: A series of images will be taken of the satellite with respect to the planet to line_16: permit accurate determination of the satellite orbital characteristics. line_18: Observations will be taken at three different wavelengths at four different line_19: times such that the set would be taken with 90 degree changes in the line_20: planetocentric longitudes. Since it is assumed that the satellite rotation is line_21: the same as its orbital period, the same images should give the same complete line_22: coverage of the surface of the satellite. These images of the primary and the line_23: satellite will provide surface colors as a function of planetary longitude, ! question: 2 section: 2 line_1: diameter and shapes. ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The first observations, at three wavelengths, are to be taken when the line_2: satellite is at greatest elongation. Since the orbital period for the line_3: satellite and the planetary rotational period are approximately 6.4 days, the line_4: three filter set of images should follow the initial observations by 1.6, 3.2 line_5: and 4.8 days. line_7: Accurate determination of the satellite orbit requires additional observations; line_8: only one color is required for these observations. These observations are line_9: specified such that the planet and satellite are separable, but such that the line_10: relative motion of the satellite to the primary is large. Thus, these line_11: observations follow the initial observations by 1.1, 2.2, 4.2 and 5.4 days. line_13: Observations to be made in SV or as early as possible in Cycles 1 and 2. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Real-time observations are not required. Observe near opposition (April 29, line_2: 1987, May 1, 1988, May 4, 1989). ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: These observations are to obtain high resolution, high S/N pictures of Pluto line_2: and its satellite so that surface colors, diameters, separations and orbital line_3: characteristics can be determined. The observations will be taken as a series line_4: at three wavelengths and the series will be taken separated in time to give line_5: different sides of Pluto and positions of the satellite in its orbit for line_6: accurate orbital characteristics. Filters F336M, F569W and F791W will be used. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: SEIDELMANN fname: P. mi: K. category: CON inst: US NAVAL OBSERVATORY addr_1: NAUTICAL ALMANAC OFFICE city: WASHINGTON state: DC zip: 20390 country: USA phone: (202) 653-1545 ! lname: GUNN fname: JAMES mi: E. category: CON inst: PRINCETON UNIVERSITY addr_1: ASTROPHYSICAL SCIENCE addr_2: PEYTON HALL city: PRINCETON state: NJ zip: 08540 country: USA phone: (609) 452-3802 ! lname: FABER fname: SANDRA mi: M. category: CON inst: UC SANTA CRUZ - LICK OBSERVATORY addr_1: NATURAL SCIENCE II, BLDG. 160 city: SANTA CRUZ state: CA zip: 95064 country: USA phone: (408) 429-2944 ! lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: (818) 356-4900 ! ! end of general_form_address records !
