The extension of the line_3: Cepheid scale to distances of the order of the Virgo Cluster has been one of line_4: the major promises that ST has offered since its inception. We will study five line_5: galaxies, three somewhat nearer than Virgo (NGC 2903, 4559, and 5033) and two line_6: Virgo galaxies (4535 and 4321), all with the aim of both determining a distance line_7: for its own sake and for the calibration of secondary indicators, primarily line_8: (with the obvious exception of 4321) the infrared Tulley-Fisher relation, but line_9: including brightest stars, globular clusters, and others. The scheme involves line_10: ten exposures on each galaxy with a sequence of exposure times designed to line_11: allow discovery and period determination to sufficient accuracy for stars with line_12: periods of ten to thirty days, and supplementary multicolor photometry to make line_13: use of period-luminosity-color/reddening-bucking relations. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES title: PROF. mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Now we get to the hard part. The sequence of observations of a Cepheid line_2: galaxy covers a period of fifty days, which must be centered roughly on the line_3: antisolar meridian. The WFC is seriously undersampled, which means that we line_4: need the pictures all to have the same position and orientation in order that line_5: crowding effects do not wipe us out. That is impossible, since the optimum line_6: roll (Nature is a bitch--most of the interesting galaxies are very close to the line_7: ecliptic) typically changes by almost 180 degrees during the sixty-day period. line_8: I will describe the best of possible worlds, and we may have to compromise line_9: later. The proposed sequence has twelve V exposures, in geometric sequence, line_10: with long gaps at one end and short ones at the other. The gaps must be line_11: accurate to of order ten percent of themselves, which for the shortest ones line_12: (about three days) is about eight hours. At intervals through the sequence, line_13: exposures in other colors are obtained, contiguous withthe visual exposures. line_14: The short intervals (in the attached logsheets, I have put the short intervals line_15: at the beginning, but they could just as easily be put at the end -- i.e., the line_16: sequence could be reversed) primarily look for short-period, relatively faint line_17: stars. It is mandatory that the roll and position be the same for all these line_18: exposures. For the last few, separated by the longest intervals, we may have line_19: to compromise, but we may also be able to do with shorter exposures and roll in line_20: the dark, since these are aimed primarily at brighter, long-period stars. In line_21: the attached sheets, I have assumed that we start with roll 30 degrees less line_22: than optimum (in all cases, the roll decreases through the sequence, since the line_23: objects are all north) and begin about forty days before the object crosses the ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: antisolar meridian. For the low=latitude sources, I have assumed that the line_2: exposure which occurs very near the antisolar point can have a large roll line_3: anomaly; this leaves only one exposure, about ten days after the antisolar line_4: point, which may be a problem. We clearly have to discuss these issues. The line_5: SAA may wreak havoc with this program, and the scheduling is going to be very line_6: difficult, but we have to find a way to do it. line_7: The difficult objects are 4535 (priority 1, lines 37-55) and 4321 line_8: (priority 2, lines 18-36); they should be done in the second year (cycles line_9: 3-4-5). The priority one object NGC 2903 (lines 1-17) and at least one of NGC line_10: 4559 (lines 56-72) and NGC 5033 (lines 73-89) should be done in cycle 1-2. line_12: P.S. We have written a simulation program to examine the effect of noise, line_13: missed exposures, and perturbations in the timing of the sequences. This can line_14: be used to explore any options you'd like to propose to us for scheduling these line_15: observations. line_17: COMMENT FROM EXPOSURE LOGSHEET,OF LINE 1,ON PAGE 8: line_19: THE DATE FOR THIS AND SUBSEQUENT CASES IS THE STARTING DATE FOR THE 50-DAY line_20: SEQUENCE OF OBSERVATIONS. THE ROLL IN EACH CASE IS THE OPTIMUM ROLL FOR THE line_21: MIDDLE OF THE SEQUENCE WHICH PLACES THE OBJECT ON THE ANTISOLAR MERIDIAN FOR line_22: THE OPTIMUM STARTING DATE GIVEN. IN NO CASE IT VIOLATES THE 5-DEGREE RULE AT line_23: THE BEGINNING AND AT THE END. ALL THE PICTURES IN EACH SEQUENCE MUST BE TAKEN ! question: 3 section: 3 line_1: AT THE SAME ORIENTATION. THE OPTIMUM ROLL FOR THIS SEQUENCE CHANGES BY ABOUT line_2: -0.5DEG/DA CHANGE IN STARTING DATE. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: One is searching for periodic phenomena with a wide range of periods with line_2: one set of observations. This requires a carefully planned sequence of line_3: observations (the ORIGIN would be irelevant, except that the exposures are long line_4: and the sequence is so long that it must be centered roughly o the antisolar line_5: meridian, and the roll constraints drive the final nail to constrain the whole line_6: thing to a few days tolerance except for a possible inversion of the sequence line_7: -- but in any case, once the origin is set, the rest is as inexorable as line_8: death). This telescope has got to do Cepheids, or Congress will claw it down line_9: and demand its billion clams back. So together we have to fid a way that will line_10: work. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Constraining the program to be done in the shadow, which would be line_2: desirable, would constrain it out of existence. The observing times are set by line_3: the other constraints, in any case. I have specified non-interruptible line_4: exposures, but that may not be possible given the existence of the SAA; in any line_5: case, it is necessary that the long exposures not be broken into more than two line_6: pieces, and that as infrequently as possible. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Three nearby and two Virgo cluster galaxies will be searched for Cepheid line_2: variable stars with the aim of using the period-color luminosity relation to line_3: find accurate distances to the parent galaxies. The galaxies will also be used line_4: to calibrate secondary indicators, including the IR Tully-Fisher relation and line_5: the brightest stars, with the ultimate hope of obtaining the Hubble constant to line_6: an accuracy of the order of ten percent. The present program seeks to lay the line_7: groundwork for more accurate determinations later with larger samples. line_9: The targets are: NGC 2903, 4321, 4535, 4559, 5033 ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: GUNN fname: JAMES mi: E. category: CON inst: PRINCETON UNIVERSITY addr_1: ASTROPHYSICAL SCIENCES addr_2: PEYTON HALL city: PRINCETON state: NJ zip: 08540 country: USA phone: (609) 452-3802 ! lname: BAUM fname: WILLIAM category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: PLANETARY RESEARCH CENTER addr_2: P.O.
