With line_3: WF/PC, incipient resolution of individual stars can be expected for ellipticals line_4: out to a modulus of 30.5 mag., while significant new information about the line_5: retinue of globular clusters surrounding ellipticals can be learned out to a line_6: modulus of 35.5 mag. A pixel-histogram technique, tested by simulations, will line_7: permit the top of the H-R diagram and the top of the stellar luminosity line_8: function to be characterized. The luminosity function for globular clusters in line_9: ellipticals will be more completely determined and their role as distance line_10: indicators more completeley developed, with possible application to improving line_11: the distance to the Coma Cluster (z = 0.022) and the determination of Ho. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES title: PROF. mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: On one flank of each elliptical galaxy, long FWC exposures (~2600 seconds) will line_2: be made through two wide-band filters (F555W and F785LP). One of such pair of line_3: frames will span at least the range from V = 22 to 25 mag arcsec -2, and a line_4: second pair of frames (in some cases) will sample the neighboring field. In line_5: the special case of M32, stepped exposure times will be needed and ultraviolet line_6: (F336W) exposures will be included in the sequence. line_8: Cycle 9: = Exposures 9, 10, 14, 15. line_9: Cycle 9: = Exposures 11-13, 16, 17, 18. line_12: COMMENT FROM TF TARGET #15: I would like to recommend different off-sets for line_13: Positions 1 and 2 in NGC 221 (M32). They will sample M32 at the same radii as line_14: before but will be overlaid with ~ 20% less (on average) of the M31 disk line_15: population. The new recommended positions are: TARGET #16 and #17. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Uninterrupted exposures are needed to maximize S/N. For all exposures line_2: 1000 sec, we request dark time. This is needed to minimize scattered light. line_3: By dark time we mean that the telescope should be beyond the brightly lit limb line_4: of the Earth in the dark half of the orbit. We do not require that the line_5: telescope actually be within the Earth's shadow. See note on exposure line_6: logsheet. The above guideline of 1000 sec may need revision after experience line_7: in orbit. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Long WFC exposures in two broad passbands will be obtained on the flanks of line_2: large elliptical galaxies (plus M32) to probe the top of the H-R diagram in the line_3: nearest ones and to investigate the luminosity function of their globular line_4: clusters. The latter will be used to help infer the distance to the Coma line_5: Cluster, which has implications concerning Hd. The objects are NGC 3379, 3377, line_6: 4649, 4552, 4881, 4051 and NGC 221. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: GUNN fname: JAMES mi: E. category: CON inst: PRINCETON UNIVERSITY addr_1: ASTROPHYSICAL SCIENCE addr_2: PEYTON HALL city: PRINCETON state: NJ zip: 08540 country: USA phone: (609) 452-3802 ! lname: FABER fname: SANDRA mi: M. category: CON inst: UC SANTA CRUZ - LICK OBSERVATORY addr_1: NATURAL SCIENCE II, BLDG. 160 city: SANTA CRUZ state: CA zip: 95064 country: USA phone: (408) 429-2944 ! lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: (818) 356-4900 ! lname: BAUM fname: WILLIAM category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: PLANETARY RESEARCH CENTER addr_2: 1400 WEST MARS HILL ROAD city: FLAGSTAFF state: AZ zip: 86002 country: USA phone: (602) 774-3358 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC3379 name_2: M105 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 10H45M11.3S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +12D50'48" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: NEARBY ELLIPTICAL GALAXY ! targnum: 2 name_1: NGC3379-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = -9.15S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = 0" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 1 equinox: 1950 comment_1: NEARBY ELLIPTICAL GALAXY ! targnum: 3 name_1: NGC3379-POS2 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = -19.94S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = 0" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 1 equinox: 1950 comment_1: NEARBY ELLIPTICAL GALAXY fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 4 name_1: NGC3377 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 10H45M02.6S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +14D14'55" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: NEARBY ELLIPTICAL GALAXY ! targnum: 5 name_1: NGC3377-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +120" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 4 equinox: 1950 comment_1: NEARBY ELLIPTICAL GALAXY fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 6 name_1: NGC4649 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 12H41M09.0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +11D49'28" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: VIRGO CLUSTER ! targnum: 7 name_1: NGC4649-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = +14.7S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = 0" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 6 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: VIRGO CLUSTER ! targnum: 8 name_1: NGC4649-POS2 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = +25.54S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = 0" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 6 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: VIRGO CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 9 name_1: NGC4552 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 12H33M08.4S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +12D49'56" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: VIRGO CLUSTER ! targnum: 10 name_1: NGC4552-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +125" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 9 equinox: 1950 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: VIRGO CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 11 name_1: NGC4881 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA = 12H57M33.0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +28D30'56" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: COMA CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 12 name_1: NGC4881-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +50" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 11 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: COMA CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 13 name_1: IC4051 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 12H58M29.7S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +28D16'36" +/-1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: COMA CLUSTER ! targnum: 14 name_1: IC4051-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA-OFF = +3.79S +/- 0.4S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = 0" +/- 6", pos_3: FROM 13 comment_1: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY IN THE comment_2: COMA CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 29.5 +/- 0.5 ! targnum: 15 name_1: NGC221 name_2: M32 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 0H39M58.0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +40D35'33" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: VERY NEARBY COMPACT comment_2: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY ! targnum: 16 name_1: NGC221-POS1 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 0H40M03.6S +/- 2", pos_2: DEC= 40D34'37" +/- 2" equinox: 1950 comment_1: VERY NEARBY COMPACT comment_2: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY comment_3: SEE G.F. 3 ! targnum: 17 name_1: NGC221-POS2 descr_1: E, 303 pos_1: RA= 0H40M20.2S +/- 2", pos_2: DEC= 40D38'15" +/- 2", equinox: 1950 comment_1: VERY NEARBY COMPACT comment_2: ELLIPTICAL GALAXY comment_3: SEE G.F. 3 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 26.0 +/- 0.5 ! ! end of fixed targets !
