In one, a set of V and I frames will be obtained at line_3: two radii to study the faint end of the luminosity function and mass line_4: segregation; in one cluster (NGC6752) the data will also reach the bright end line_5: of the white dwarf luminosity function. line_7: In the other, the nuclei of a number of clusters will be imaged in the U band line_8: to study the core properties and the existance of a collapsed cusp if any. The line_9: clusters are relatively nearby and their core properties span the range from line_10: extremely regular to extremely cusplike. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: In each filed in each cluster, a series of exposures in different filters is line_2: obtained. In the outer parts, half-orbit-long exposures, accompanied by a line_3: short cosmic-ray rejection image, are obtained. In the crowded inner parts, line_4: the orbits are broken into three or six pieces to avoid saturation covering too line_5: large a fraction of the real estate. In all these frames, the formal surface line_6: brightness is too high for the exposure times requested, but simulations and line_7: calculations show that most of the brightness is in a few bright stars which line_8: will run severely, but the blast tracks will cover only a small fraction of the line_9: area of the detector. In most instances the signal-to-noise numbers are given; line_10: the exposure times are such that the system noise is a bit lower than the line_11: crowding noise. It is not necessary for these pictures, if the telescope line_12: baffling performs as expected, for the exposures to be done entirely in the line_13: dark, but it is necessary for many of them to be done in the DARK HALF of the line_14: orbit (see Section 6), and that means that they need to be done near the line_15: antisolar meridian. Since the launch date is not known, the specification of line_16: the cycle makes no sense; the breakdown should be approximately as follows: line_17: (But is not critical.) ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Many exposures in this program are sequences of exposure times on the same line_2: object with the same or different filters. It is imperative that these be done line_3: with exactly the same pointing, so that the undersampled WFC pictures can be line_4: compared and combined. As usual, we request uninterrupted exposures in order line_5: not to pay the signal-to-noise penalty associated with additional readouts. line_7: It is also desired that all exposures longer than 1000 sec be taken after the line_8: telescope has passed beyond the brightly lit limb of the Earth (see note on line_9: "dark time" on exposure logsheets). It is not requested that the telescope line_10: actually be within the Earth's shadow. Dark time is needed to minimize diffuse line_11: scattered light and maximize S/N on faint stars. The above guidelines of 1000 line_12: sec may need modification after real experience in orbit. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Multicolor observations will be made in two fields each in M3, M13, and line_2: NGC6752, for the purpose of measuring the luminosity function, mass line_3: segregation, and for the discovery of white dwarfs and other low-luminosity line_4: stars. Ultraviolet exposures in the nuclei of M3, M92, M15, and 6752 will be line_5: made to investigate the details of the core shape in the light of the turnoff line_6: dwarfs. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: M3 descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA= 13H39M52.9S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +28D37'38" +/-1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=16.3 ! targnum: 2 name_1: M13 descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA=16H39M54.2S+/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC=+36D33'16"+/-1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER comment_2: B-V=0.69 ALSO FOR FLUX DATA fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=16.6 ! targnum: 3 name_1: NGC6752 descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA= 19H06M27.3S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= -60D03'50" +/-1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER comment_2: B-V=0.68 ALSO FOR FLUX DATA fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 16.2 ! targnum: 4 name_1: M15 descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA= 21H27M33.3S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +11D56'49" +/-1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER comment_2: B-V=0.68 ALSO FOR FLUX DATA fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 13.5 ! targnum: 5 name_1: M92 descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA= 17H15M35.0S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +43D11'21" +/-1" equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER comment_2: B-V=0.68 ALSO FOR FLUX DATA fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 15.4 ! targnum: 6 name_1: M3-105-NORTH descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +105" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 1 equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 18.0 ! targnum: 7 name_1: M3-300-NORTH descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +300" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 1 equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 21.6 ! targnum: 8 name_1: M13-123-NORTH descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +123" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 2 equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 18.0 ! targnum: 9 name_1: M13-400-SOUTH descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = -400" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 2 equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 22.3 ! targnum: 10 name_1: NGC6752-105-NORTH descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: RA-OFF = 0S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC-OFF = +105" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 3 equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 18.0 ! targnum: 11 name_1: NGC6752-300-PA330 descr_1: C, 201 pos_1: R = 300", pos_2: PA = 330D, pos_3: FROM 3 equinox: 1950 comment_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTER fluxnum_1: 11 fluxval_1: SURF(V) = 21.4 ! ! end of fixed targets !
