Reading Image files

NICMOS data are stored in the FITS format. Each FITS file contains a main header followed by 5 extensions that contain the actual image data along with error, pixel quality, sample, and integration time information. These files are read into internal IDL data structures using IDL programs designed specifically for FITS files of this format. If there are any problems with reading these files, the program immediately reports a problem and stops.
