Hack STSCI N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Abstract Determination of the focus of the FOC is difficult because of the lack of aberrations. For small focus errors, it is very difficult to determine the sign of any focus error. We propose to use the field dependent astigmatism to remove this degeneracy. We will perform a fine focus sweep by moving the DOB to -1mm, -0.5mm, 0.0, +0.5mm, +1mm from nominal, and take images of a star using the F486N filter and placing the star in newly-defined apertures that are close to the edges of the field, where the field-dependent astigmatism is greatest. The appearance of the star as a function of focus will be unique, and this will allow an unambiguous determination of the focus. Before this program can be run, new apertures must be defined with size 256x256, SAMPOFF=0 and SAMPOFF=768, and LINEOFF=384. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Observations Description ------------------------ Use of the 256x256 formats will require an INT ACQ to place the target at the proper position. For each DOB setting, the star will be imaged with the 256x256 -L, 256x256-R and 256x256 formats. Three INTFLATs will precede the external observations to provide information of the relative positions of the new apertures relative to the full format. Real Time Justification ----------------------- A Mode I Target Acquisition is necessary to place the star in the center of the 256x256 formats. Calibration Justification ------------------------- The current method of monitoring focus has been found to be somewhat ambiguous, particularly with regard to the sign of any focus error.
