Abstract We will determine the most useful spectropolarimetric modes of the FOS. To acheive this goal we will determine the locations of the polarization spectra, the transmission of the polarizer, the angles of the Wollaston prisms and waveplates in celestial coordinates, and the instrumental polarization. The G190H, G270H, G400H gratings in combination with the FOS Blue detector and 1.0 aperture will be calibrated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6917( 2) - 03/26/96 16:36 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ Part 1. Measurements of the internal Pt-Ne lamps will be used to locate the two oppositely polarized spectra that occur with the polarimeter. The positions of the split spectra will be compared to those of spectra taken without the polarimeter. The data will be used to determine a wavelength scale for the most commonly used modes of the polarimeter. (VISIT 1) Part 2. The wavelength scale with the new Y-balance values will be checked. (VISIT 2) Part 3. The instrumental polarization, flat-field corrections, and throughput of the polarimeter will be measured by observing the polarimetric and photometric standard BD+28D4211. (VISIT 3) Part 3. The angles of the Wollastons and waveplates will be measured in celestial coordinates by observing a polarized standard (BD+64D106) with the FOS/BL y-axis at north position angle about 86.4 deg. (VISIT 4) Note: Observations in Parts 1 and 2 can be done in parallel with another instrument prime or in occultation. The observations in Part 1 must precede those in Parts 2, 3 and 4. At least two weeks should be allowed after the data from Part 1 are in hand before scheduling Parts 2, 3 and 4. It is preferable for Part 3 to occur before Part 4, but it is not essential. All observations are minimum plan. Pointing stability of 10% of the smallest aperture used (i.e. 0.1") is required. Note that for the y-base maps with the polarizer (Part 1), the map is normally centered on the y-base for the lower of the two polarization spectra. We have therefore broken the maps into two segments, one to be centered on the lower spectrum, and one to be centered on the upper. The lower will use the default Y value, while the upper should be +750 Y-units from the lower. Polarimetric observations need to be taken as a single sequence of observations. Changes in background, position angle of the spacecraft, and other variables can all adversely affect the results. This test is stray light sensitive.
