The source is also highly polarized (26% in the blue), and Keck data recently obtained by one of us shows broad emission lines in polarized light, while the narrow lines are unpolarized. We propose to obtain polarimetric imaging of the blue continuum of this source with the FOC, and imaging of the unpolarized narrow CIV line with the linear ramp filter in WFPC2. We will use our gravitational lens model to interpret these images, allowing us to measure the relative locations and sizes of the scattering region and the narrow emission line region on scales as small as 50 pc. Questions Observing_Description: To assess the polarization uncertainties we used FOCSIM, the FOC simulator. The input spectrum used was the Keck spectrum obtained by Goodrich et al. (1995), scaled to match the B-band photometry of Broadhurst & Lehar (1995) to account for the slit losses in the spectroscopy. Our filter of choice is F437M, which isolates the blue continuum between LyAlpha/N V and Si IV 1402. The FOC simulator with both F437M and POL0 in the beam indicates a total source rate of 0.40 ct s^-1 and a background rate of 0.00054 ct s^-1 pixel^-1. The source counts will be spread over the length and width of the arc. The arc is unresolved in PC2 F814W images, so we use three 0.014" pixels (the FOC PSF) as the width, and 0.7" as the length (Eisenhardt et al. 1995). The arc should hence cover 150 pixels. We wish to achieve a polarization uncertainty of Sigma(P) = 3% over each 0.1" length of the arc. In an exposure of t minutes we will reach a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in total intensity of 1.69 (square)rt(t) for each segment. The polarization uncertainty for the FOC is Sigma(P) = (square)rt(2) times 1 over S/N where the S/N is for the sum of all three polarizer angles. Hence in 15 orbits (~750 minutes total exposure) we will reach S/N = 46 on each arc segment, and Sigma(P) = 3%. For the counterimage, assuming the same magnification as in our F814W data, and an unresolved detection aperture of 9 pixels, we obtain S/N = 9 and Sigma(P) = 16%. For the CIV line image, we used the WFPC2 simulator with the F502N filter as an approximation to the performance with the LRF, adjusting for the ~20% lower transmission of the LRF at 5087 Angstroms. The FWHM of the LRF is ~60 Angstroms. Using the CIV line flux of 1.3 * 10^-15 ergs cm^-2 s^-1 (Goodrich et al. 1995) over 20 WF pixels, we obtain a S/N of 10 per pixel per orbit, and one for the counterimage. Therefore 16 orbits are needed for a reliable (two independent 3 Sigma) detection of the counterimage. Our polarimetry strategy is designed to minimize errors due to changes in PSF over timescales of one orbit or more by obtaining measurements in all three FOC polarizers each orbit. We also will measure the polarization at two telescope orientations to test for instrumental polarization. To average over flat field uncertainties we are dithering over three positions at the first orientation and two positions for the second orientation. We are reobserving the source in F814W for one orbit to ensure good astrometric registration of our existing 3 orbit F814W image, and to check for the possibiity of variability in the source. For the CIV imaging with the WFPC2 LRF we will observe at 4 dither positions each with 3 or 4 orbits to filter out cosmic rays and improve the spatial sampling using the parallelogram 1/2 pixel dither pattern. Since we have 3 or 4 orbits at each position there is no need for CR-SPLITting of exposures. We will also obtain parallel exposures with WFPC2 in F814 during the FOC polarimetry exposures, for the following reason: Soifer et al (1994) found that there is an overdensity in the number of faint galaxies in the angular vicinity of FSC10214+4724, relative to randomly-selected fields (cf., Djorgovski et al 1995). The bulk of faint field galaxies are likely to lie at redshifts less than that of FSC10214+4724, $z=2.3$, so large structures in these populations will affect the lensing. The total magnification of the source and interimage time delays are affected by the presence of a sheet of matter along the line of sight, and transverse (i.e., angular) gradients of the overdensity mass field add to the asymmetry or ellipticity of the lensing potential (e.g., Blandford & Narayan, 1992; Schneider, Ehlers & Falco, 1992). The Eisenhardt et al (1996) lens model for FSC10214+4724 required more ellipticity in the lens potential than the ellipticity in the light distribution of the lensing galaxy would suggest, even when the expected shearing effect of the other bright sources in the field was taken into account. This strongly suggests that shear from a much larger-scale overdensity is at work. Parallel WFPC2 observations of 2 fields (automatically obtained since we are observing with the FOC at two different roll angles) at a displacement of 4.5 arcmin from the primary source will provide an excellent pair of baselines along which we can calculate the full two-dimensional angular gradient of the faint field galaxy overdensity. At redshifts 1, 4.5 arcmin corresponds 1 h^-1 Mpc, which is the natural scale for density gradients in walls, filaments and clusters (e.g., Le F`evre et al 1996). The F814W filter is well suited for faint galaxy work, matches our previous FSC10214+4724 imaging, and is a standard filter for deep imaging in randomly selected HST/MDS fields (Griffiths et al 1994) and the Hubble Deep field (Williams et al 1996). Hence parallel observations with WFPC2/F814W during our FOC observations will enable us to measure the faint galaxy overdensity and its full 2-dimensional gradient, and are important for accurate modelling of the complex lens system FSC10214+4724. Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: Astrometric registration of the CIV emission line image, our existing F814W image, and the FOC polarimetry data to 0.01" is essential to allow the determination of the relative locations of the narrow and broad emission line regions in the source. We are observing a B=19 star 12" east of the primary source just prior to the primary source observations for this purpose. This star will also serve as a check on our polarimetry reductions through the F437M filter, which is not a regularly calibrated filter. The star will also facilitate deconvolution of the images.
