Free format text (please update) This proposal is for far-UV imaging and spectroscopy of Jupiter's auroral emissions in the H Ly-alpha (1216 Angstrom) and H_2 Lyman and Werner bands (1150-1650 Angstrom) at the same time as scheduled GALILEO spacecraft measurements of Jupiter's magnetospheric properties and UV emissions in Fall 1996 and Spring 1997. The HST data will extend our existing WFPC 2 images and GHRS spectra of Jupiter's auroral emissions from a cycle 5 program to be scheduled in July 1996 during a period of intensive GALILEO observations of Jupiter. Because the GALILEO mission does not have an auroral imager, these observations are key to the interpretation of the GALILEO magnetospheric and auroral data to determine the relative intensity and spatial distribution of auroral activity during GALILEO sequences. We propose supporting observations during each observable UVS auroral sequence in cycle 6, and one additional WFPC 2 imaging series coincident with particles and fields measurements during one orbital pass near Jupiter. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We propose far-UV observations of Jupiter with WFPC 2 and GHRS at the same times as GALILEO Ultraviolet Spectrometer (UVS) and Fields and Particles (F&P) observations of Jupiter, targeted to specific GALILEO observing sequences or F&P data obtained in specific regions of the magnetosphere (F&P data will be obtained by default when GALILEO is within 50 R_J of Jupiter). HST observations can be obtained before Nov. 1996 and after March 1997, with the exception of lunar avoidance periods. WFPC 2 imaging will consist of pairs of far-UV images, using F160BW and F160BW + F130LP, to image the auroral and airglow emissions from the H_2 Lyman and Werner band systems with and without emission from the H Ly-alpha line. We will include shorter exposures using filters F218W and/or FQCH4N to image the polar hood aerosol distribution in absorption (near-UV) and scattering (methane band). During the GALILEO orbit 2 full rotation sequence we will also obtain GHRS G140L and Ech-A spectra of specific regions in Jupiter's auroral emissions identified in the initial WFPC 2 far-UV images, targeting the following regions: 1) the "normal" northern auroral emission oval near 180degrees CML, 2) the inter-oval emission at higher latitudes, 3) the Io magnetic footprint at lower latitudes. begincenter centerlineGALILEO UVS and Fields & Particles (F&P) Observations of Jupiter's Aurora begintabularccclc G. We have defined standard "imaging" and "spectra" orbits for our cycle 5 GO program observing Jupiter with GALILEO, using one orbit for imaging and one orbit for 3 spectra of one location. We also propose periodic imaging over one GALILEO orbit as the spacecraft moves through regions of expected particle precipitation. If we obtain one imaging orbit every Jupiter rotation for 7 rotations, we can cover a range of GALILEO distances from Jupiter from 25 to 8 R_J while GALILEO is on the Earth-facing side of Jupiter. We can further decrease the total orbits required by overlapping this observing sequence with one of the above events, providing 1 of the imaging orbits. Please note that GALILEO orbits 7 and 8 occur after the servicing mission, hence only WFPC 2 imaging can be performed. beginfigureh to2.6inrule0pt2.6in specialpsfile=magpak.ps angle=270 hoffset=100 voffset=180 vscale=30 hscale=30 captionSample GALILEO Orbit with 6 hour ticks endfigure Real_Time_Justification: These observations must be scheduled in the HST visibility window closest to the GALILEO sequences, as indicated on the preceding table. Not knowing the orbital ephemeris of HST in 1996-97, we will have to wait for the detailed scheduling. We have checked for lunar avoidance constraints, as listed in the above table. The F160BW WFPC 2 images and GHRS Ech-A spectra should be obtained in, or close to, the dark time portion of the HST orbit, which determines the order of exposures in each orbit. Jupiter's far-UV aurora can only be recorded from a space- based platform, and only at 0.1 arc sec resolution by HST. However, IR H_3^+ emissions imaged from the ground are important tracers of the ionospheric temperature, supplying complementary information to the direct (and prompt) excitation observed in the far-UV. We will propose for near- simultaneous ground-based near-IR H_3^+ images of Jupiter with the NSFCAM instrument on the IRTF. J. Connerney with the assistance of G. Ballester will propose for this time, perform the observations, and analyze the data in comparison with the HST data. Calibration_Justification: !
