This is an especially important period because Mars Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor will be in cruise phase during this time. We have included the landing site for Pathfinder in our WFPC2 targets to provide a record of the atmosphere and surface in the region during the ten months preceding the landing. We propose to continue our synoptic monitoring of Mars which commenced in Cycle 0 to record seasonal changes in the clouds and opacity of the martian atmosphere as well as changes in the albedos and spectra of surface units on the planet. The significant overlap between the four years of observations will permit a study of inerannual variability in clouds, aerosols, and surface features. Three final FOS scans to complete that data set are also requested. Questions Observing_Description: WFPC2 targets are deignated by MARS-Central Meridian Longitude-Areocentric Longitude except for the WDIURNAL sequence. The 41 orbits requested continue the synoptic observations of Mars we have compiled since 1990 and, in addition, provide support for the Mars Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor Missions. Especially for Pathfinder, which lands at the end of Cycle 6, knowledge of current martian conditions is essential to the success of the mission. The increase in orbits requested from Cycles 4/5 is largely a result of the added coverage of the Ares Valles region, where Pathfinder will land. The two important considerations for monitoring changes in martian surface and meteorology are the temporal resolution of the observations, which determines the time scale of changes which can be observed, and the fraction of the planet imaged at any one time. Observations are scheduled every 10-20 degrees of areocentric solar longitude during early northern spring when there are major dynamical meteorological changes, especially involving phenomena in the polar regions. Following a hiatus for the Servicing Mission, a global sequence is scheduled at opposition, near summer solstice. Following summer solstice, temporal frequency is reduced to every 15 degrees of areocentric longitude. Any particular image of Mars is defined by the central meridian or sub earth longitude of the planet at the time of the observation. At the sub earth latitude, longitudes sixty degrees on either side of the central meridian can be usefully observed so that one can make an effective global view of the planet at this latitude. The larger overlap in the polar region allows good views of the illuminated pole. In our global sequences, three central meridians separated by 120 degrees are imaged on separate orbits: 270 degrees, showing the Syrtis Major region and the dynamic Elysium region; 150 degrees, featuring the W cloud complex associated with Tharsis and Valles Marineris, and 30 degrees, featuring the Pathfinder landing site in Ares Valles. Exceptions to the above are: an additional central meridian at opposition to test the feasibility of cloud motion studies and facilitate making global maps and mosaics, and two additional orbits at areocentric longitude 140 specifically to study the diurnal variation in Ares Valles shortly before the Pathfinder landing. In addition, two FOS targets are requested to extend our current FOS data base before the instrument is removed. The particular filters chosen are selected for the following reasons: 1. Ultraviolet pair within (230W) and outside (336W) of the Hartley absorption bands of ozone for studying atmospheric aerosols. 2. Violet (410M), green (502N), and red (673N) triplet for color reconstruction and for studying clouds and albedo changes. 3. Definition of reflectance spectrum for surface composition studies: LRF7400, LRF8600, 953N, 1042M. This same set of filters was used during Cycle 5; this experience shows that the requested observations can be made on one orbit. begintabularlll Cycle 6 & Primary Orbits:41 & Exposures:345, endtabular Real_Time_Justification: These observations are time critical since the maximum value of synoptic monitoring is achieved when sequences are roughly evenly spaced. In addition, it is important that targets in this and other cycles be separated by exactly one martian year in order to separate seasonal from interannual effects. Thus the sequences of images should be scheduled within a few days of the optimum areocentric longitudes. The central meridian on Mars to be targeted requires additional selectivity in terms of the particular orbit chosen within those broader time intervals. Martin, Lee, and James will submit a proposal to NASA Planetary Astronomy to support co-ordinated earth based observations of Mars during this period.
