Weak T-Tauri stars (WTTS) are thought to have dissipated their circumstellar disks recently, possibly by forming planetary systems. We propose to observe 16 WTTS in Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus, the nearest star-forming regions, concentrating on targets that have been demonstrated not to have stellar companions based on recent speckle imaging, deep imaging with CCD and infrared arrays from the ground, and lunar-occultation observations. Superplanets would be detected in their intrinsic thermal radiation. Because of the superb peak-to-wing ratio of its point spread function, HST is uniquely capable of performing this survey and determining the statistical occurrence of superplanets. Questions Observing_Description: In this proposal we request 2 exposures per target through the F1042M filter at each of two spacecraft roll angles. Based on the recent detection of the brown dwarf Gls 229 B with WFPC2 by another group, we have determined that this filter will give us much better contrast between a superplanet and the star than the F785LP (I band) filter we had originally proposed. The two roll angles allow us to distinguish between faint companions and residual features of the PSF near the limit of our sensitivity. Dithering between the two exposures in each orbit will aid in bad pixel removal, and splitting each exposure in two will allow for cosmic ray removal. The maximum exposure per orbit on each target allowed by the overheads reported by the RPS2 software is 2100 seconds. Real_Time_Justification: In order to allow us time to examine at least some of exposures before we receive the bulk of the data, we have added the constraint that three of our targets be observed before 1996 Aug 15. This will give us some flexibility for maximizing the scientific return in the rest of the exposures, should we make a detection.
