Free format text (please update) We will combine HST FOS and GHRS observations with ground- based Keck Observatory spectra of several QSOs with known za~ze absorption lines to (1) derive elemental abundances, (2) test the hypothesis that za~ze systems are physically related to the QSOs, and (3) study the physical nature of za~ze regions and their relationship (if any) to other QSO phenomena, such as the X-ray warm absorbers and broad emission lines. The abundance derivations are our ultimate goal because of the broad implications for the formation and evolution of galaxies. Several recent studies suggest that the metallicities in near-QSO environments are often above solar, with a possible trend for higher metallicities at higher redshifts and/or QSO luminosities. The za~ze absorption lines have not yet been fully utilized in this regard, but they could be the best probes available for deriving metal abundances near the centers of high redshift galaxies. HST spectra are required to measure important diagnostic lines in the UV, while the Keck observations (at ~8 km/s resolution) will vastly improve upon existing data for lines accessible from the ground. The combined data will yield the best available measurements of the velocities, column densities and range of ionizations in za~ze systems. We will derive abundances from these data using detailed models of the ionization in each line forming environment. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will observe 5 QSOs to measure associated absorbtion lines with the FOS/RD and G270H grating. We expect total S/N ratios in the coadded spectra of each object to be between 40 and 60/diode. Real_Time_Justification: None. Calibration_Justification: !
