Both line and continuum flux have been detected over a few arcseconds, but the nature of the extended emission, and its relation to the nuclear energy source is unclear. However their (UV rest-frame) fluxes suggest they are galaxies with star-formation on a very large scale. Deep WFPC2 images are proposed in two colours to resolve and characterize selected high redshift QSOs whose host galaxies have been detected. We propose specially designed PSF observations for prescription retrieval modelling to deal with the problematic nuclear point source contamination. We will also combine the HST data with ground-based adaptive-optics images from the Canada-France- Hawaii Telescope, to increase the signal and resolution in the fainter regions. Questions Observing_Description: We are proposing specific PSF observation sequences as a unique database to derive the optical configuration of the HST at the time of the science observations. This will be done using prescription retrieval techniques (Redding et al, App.Opt.32,10,1993; Redding et al, WFPC2 calib wrkshp 1995). Prescription retrieval is the process of deriving the optical state of a system by parameter estimation techniques using input image data. We will solve for the HST configuration in our science observations using our previous estimates of PC prescription, the deep data obtained in this observing program, and WFPC2 focus-run data obtained by Krist and Burrows (App.Opt. 1995 in press). In addition to optical parameters, there will be significant PSF effects from CCD detector non-linearities: saturation, blooming, and residual image. These effects are common to all observing programs, and we will work closely with the WFPC2 team at JPL and others at DAO to account for these effects properly. Our ability to predict and subtract the scaled PSF requires understanding the prediction error with small variations in source spectral content, field, and registration. We intend to quantify our ability to predict the PSF at differing source locations, registrations, and exposures by a variety of methods. First, we will quantify PSF prediction errors based on prescription model parameter uncertainties and standard error propagation calculations. Second, we will use bootstrap statistical techniques on our PSF exposures and study the predictive power with fit models based on subsets of the data scored against the remainder of the data. Finally, we will use other stars in the PSF field, independent PSF fields, and stars in the target QSO fields, as empirical checks on the errors. Because of the temporal variations in the HST optical state and variation in low- level PSF features with HST focus, we need to obtain the PSF data contemporaneously with the QSO observations (i.e., within a few days if at all possible, and certainly within a few weeks). The PSF exposures need to be at least as deep (in terms of PSF detail) as the QSO observations so that all PSF structures in the QSO frames can be removed. The proposed PSF observations will require 4 HST orbits to complete. The data set will consist of four sequences of exposures of a star in each of the two filters (F606W and F702W) being used for the QSO observations. These four sequences correspond to four field positions: the center and the vertices of a triangle surrounding the nominal PC chip position for the QSOs. The pattern is ~3 arcsec on a side (to match the nominal positioning accuracy of targets on the WFPC2 focal plane), and oriented at an angle with respect to the CCD rows and columns, to provide both minimum overlap of PSF diffraction features and maximum prescription retrieval fitting leverage in determining alignment parameters. Each exposure sequence will contain pairs of exposures with durations of 0.23 sec, 10 sec, and 80 sec. The paired exposures will be used to both minimize the effect of noise in the prescription retrievals and to identify cosmic ray events (we do not need three or more exposures for cosmic ray removal in the prescription retrieval work --- all that is needed is to identify suspect bad pixels and give them zero weight in the fitting procedures). The shortest exposures are designed to properly expose the PSF core and enable accurate registration of the PSF with the QSO cores. The 0.23-second exposure time is the minimum WFPC2 exposure time for which the PSF characteristics are unaffected by the shutter flight time. This range of exposure times will provide measurements of PSF features over the dynamic range of the science observations; PSF features that are factors of 10^4 and 10^5 weaker than the core will be measured at S/N approximately 35 and 8.5 respectively. Including instrumental overheads, each sequence requires approximately 19 minutes to complete. We are limited by the maximum number (14) of WFPC2 images per orbit, but can complete 2 sequences per orbit fairly efficiently. The sequences will be chosen to avoid pixels affected by the residual image from previous saturated exposures. The PSF target will be chosen to be of the magnitude (V~11) to provide the proper signal on the faint PSF features, yet not saturate in the short exposures. It must also be of spectral type mid-A to match the (redshifted) spectral energy distribution of the QSOs. Finally, it must be sufficiently isolated to avoid confusion from fainter stars. If we use a CVZ field we might also be able to obtain an additional pair of (180sec) exposures on a secondary more crowded field to test registration and colour effects, without using more orbits. Ideally the PSF observations would include deliberate focus diversity measurements: i.e. by moving the secondary mirror. Such measurements would increase the PSF observing time requirements and are also not likely to be embraced by HST operations. We believe that we can utilize archival focus-run data sets to establish the basic HST/WFPC2 prescription parameters (work now in progress) and use the additional PSF observations described here to fine-tune the optical model. The QSO target images will be taken centred in the PC with the two filters (F606W and F702W). Exposures will be of order two orbits (4000 sec) per filter, and will be read out 3 times for cosmic ray removal, or as often as needed to minimize saturation in the nuclei. Real_Time_Justification: The PSF observations are designed to be used for all the QSOs in the program. Because the HST OTA is still changing over times of months, we request that all the observations in this program be completed within 4-6 weeks, and that this period not include any major focus or secondary mirror movements. This consideration overrides that of dark-time, since the planned PSF observations will also measure any scattered light that may be caused by the bright earth. We plan to enable another 2 exposures by choosing the PSF observation field in the CVZ. However, this is not a requirement. As mentioned in the science section, supporting CFHT observations are proposed. Simultaneity is not required. The HST observations on their own will be of unique importance, and some CFHT data exist already. We could also have all Visits done after SM97, but the scheduling windows favor times in fall 1996 and early in 1997.
