Abstract Over the past few years a GTO team project has obtained extensive GHRS echelle data of UV transitions of heavy elements in the Hg-Mn stars chi Lupi and Kappa Cancri. Isotopic anomalies, in which only the heaviest isotope of Hg, Pt and Tl is present, have been observed in chi Lupi, but are apparently absent in Kappa Cancri. Kappa Cancri is distinguished from chi Lupi by both its higher effective temperature and its larger Mn abundance. To help constrain theoretical interpretations of the abundance and isotope anomalies, this program will observe the Hg-Mn star HR7775, which has the same effective temperature as chi-Lupi, but also has substantially higher Mn and Bi abundances. Observations of HR 7775 will include lines of B III, S I, Au II and III, Pt I, II, and III, Hg II and III, Ru II, Zr III, Ge I, As I, Cd II, Gd III, Ta II, Sb II and N I. Additional observations of chi Lupi will also be obtained including observations of Bi III, Tl III, Cu II and Ir II. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6275( 8) - 04/19/96 16:50 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ This program consists of two eight orbit visits to the Hg-Mn star HD193452 (HR7775), and one four orbit visit to HD141556 (chi Lupi). All acquisitions will be done using mirror N1 and SEARCH-SIZE=5. All echelle observations will be done using FP-SPLIT=STD and STEP-PATT=7. All quoted exposure times are integral multiples of 4 X 27.2 and are chosen so that no FP-SPLIT subexposure (= 1/4 of exposure time) is greater than 5 minutes. The quoted S/N ratios are for each sub-step bin, assuming that data from different carousel positions will be aligned and coadded. For visits 1 and 2, the Hg-Mn star HD193452=HR7775 will be acquired using mirror N1 and then centered in the SSA. Using N1 the expected count rate for this target when in the LSA is 35000 cnt/sec or 7000 cnts / 200 ms step. Plan for visit 1 (8 orbits); Acquire HD193452 using mirror N1 and then do an ACQ/PEAKUP to center the target in the SSA. Then do 16 iterations of a 870.4 s exposure (13926.4 s total) using order 39 of echelle A centered at 1423 A. A side switch is then done during the occultation at the end of the th orbit, and 5 iterations of a 979.2 s exposure (4896.0 s total) is done using echelle-B centered at 1942 A. Plan for Visit 2 (8 orbits); Acquire HD193452 as in visit one, but perform the side switch during the first occultation. At the start of the second orbit, do 14 iterations of a 1088.0 s echelle-B exposure centered at 1740.6 A (15232.0 s total), followed by 3 iterations of a 979.2 sec exposure (2937.6 sec total) centered at 2144 A. Plan for Visit 3 (4 orbits); This visit will be to our second target, HD141556=chi Lupi. We will again acquire and peakup in the SSA using mirror N1. We expect there to be between 30000 and 50000 counts per 200 ms step in the LSA. We will then take the following echelle exposures: 3 X 1088.0S = 3264.0 sec at 1557 A. 2 X 1196.8S = 2393.6 sec at 1423 A. side switch at end of 3rd orbit 652.8 sec at 2134 A 435.2 sec at 2192 A 435.2 sec at 2246 A 326.4 sec at 2506 A. Real Time Justification ----------------------- Calibration Justification ------------------------- Additional Comments ------------------- The 20 orbits in this proposal come from Jack Brandt's GTO time intended for cometary observations. The visits in this proposal have been placed ON HOLD because these 20 orbits have also been scheduled together with orbits from Hal Weaver's GO target of opportunity program 5844 Weaver. This program (6275 Brandt) will remain on hold until Jack Brandt decides to remove his time from the cometary program and release it for these observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6275( 8) - 04/19/96 16:50 - [ 3] Data Distribution Media: 8MM Blocking Factor: 10 Ship To: Dave Leckrone*NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER*Code 681*Greenbelt, MD 20771 Ship Via: UPS Email: hrsleckrone@stars.gsfc.nasa.gov , ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6275( 8) - 04/19/96 16:50 - [ 4] TARGET LIST a) Fixed Targets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tar| Target | Target | Target |Coord | Radial | Flux data No | Name | Description | Position |Eqnx | Vel. | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 HD193452 STAR, BP RA=20H20M46.48S+/-0.1S,DEC=- J2000.00 V = - V = 6.10+/-0.05 14D47'5.45"+/-0.2" 17.5 B-V = -0.02 U-B = -0.11 F-CONT(1423.0)=2.8e-11 F-CONT(1437.0)=2.5e-11 F-CONT(1740.0)=2.7e-11 F-CONT(1908.0)=2.6e-11 F-CONT(1849.0)=2.6e-11 F-CONT(1942.0)=2.5e-11 Comments: PPM catalog position and proper motion given, GSC F-CONT(2144.0)=2.2e-11 position differs by 1.5" from PPM and SAO positions, F-CONT(2700.0)=1.7e-11 GSC gives RA=20H20M46.57S DEC=-14D47'05.5", Target is 3 arc minutes from HR7776, V=3.08, Target is an SB1 binary.
