FLIERs are characterized by very high velocities (50-100 km s^-1), very low ionizations (the dominant lines are from neutral or singly ionized N, O, S, Mg and Fe), and a high abundance of N (the local N/O enrichment of 5 in many cases). The formation, excitation, and ionization processes of FLIERs are not at all understood. We propose to use the HST to study the structure and physical properties of FLIERs on size scales of the mean free paths of photons and the recombination zones behind shocks, 10^15 cm, in order to understand the enigmatic relationship of FLIERs and their parent nebulae. Only on these scales is it possible to tell whether FLIERs are ionization fronts, shocks, and/or excited by jets of collimated particles being flung continuously from deep within the stellar nucleus. Although the immediate aim of the proposed observations is a good phenomenological description of FLIERs, the observations will help to develop and/or constrain scenarios for their formation and evolution. Questions Observing_Description: The scientific goals are based on the variations seen in the ratios of HST images using the WFPC. The filters are narrowband filters centered on nebular emission lines of interest. The targets have high and irregular surface brightnesses in many of these lines. This means that the CCD exposure times must be estimated carefully to avoid nonlinear response. COMMENT 1. Planetaries have very high surface brightness in the emission lines. Expect that guide star photogrpahs of them may be badly burnt out. Some of them, such as NGC6826 and NGC7662, are known to be surrounded by patchy, ~5 arcmin, emission-line halos. This may complicate the selection of nearby guide stars. FURTHER INFORMATION IS NOTED IN THE VISIT COMMENTS FOR EACH TARGET. COMMENT 2. ** IT IS CRUCIAL TO OPERATE THE WFPC IN ITS LINEAR REGIME. ** Please carelfully scrutinize the computations (and the assumptions that underlie them) in the written comments sent to Chris Ready, my PC. COMMENT 3. The target NGC3242 barely fits in the PC - but only if (1) it is oriented along one of the four PC diagonals, and (2) if the telescope pointing is accurate to 1 arcsec (which is the error in the absolute position supplied here for the central star). See comments to visit 1 for more details. Real_Time_Justification: Calibration_Justification: Additional_Comments: We hope to study FLIERs and their environments. FLIERs are generally found near the edges of elliptical PNs. Observing them with the spatial resolution of the PC is a primary goal of the project. The scientific aims will derive from variations seen in ratios of PC images. Therefore operating the CCDs in their linear range is crucial. Since the nebulae have extremely high surface brightness in H-alpha and [O III]5007, the exposure strategy places a premium on avoiding saturation (assumed to be 53,000 electrons per pixel for the WFPC).
