Abstract We will observe and analyze a sample of four QSOs to verify tentative detections of the very high ionization broad emission line, Ne VIII 774. This line has not been securely identified in any QSO, but our analysis of one probable detection shows that it would require a new understanding of QSO environments. In particular, (1) Ne VIII implies much higher ionization in the broad emission line region (BELR) than previously recognized, and (2) the physical conditions required for Ne VIII are equivalent to those needed for both X-ray "warm absorbers" and optically thin models of the "big blue bump." Related work by investigators on this project also shows that associated Ne VIII 774 absorption occurs within ~200 pc of at least one QSO. Thus, Ne VIII emission might be a tracer of the hot gas responsible for these various other features, and it could identify that gas as part of the BELR. The proposed study will take a necessary step toward determining the strength and frequency of Ne VIII 774 emission in QSO samples. Negative results would establish the first firm upper limits on the BELR ionization. Positive results would (1) directly measure the ionization in a newly identified hot component of the BELR, (2) determine the amount of hot gas present, and (3) establish the feasibility of linking the BELR with other high energy phenomena. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6103( 0) - 07/18/95 20:02 - [ 2] Observations Description ------------------------ We will use FOS/BL and the G160L and G270H gratings to obtain spectra with complete wavelength coverage from ~1200 to ~3300 Angstrom in two QSOs. We will use the Binary Search acquisition and the 1.0" aperture. We will use only FOS/BL (instead of FOS/RD for the G270H setting) so the two gratings can be used in one orbit without switching detectors. For the exposure times given below, we expect SNRs per diode of ~25 to 35 for each object and each grating setting (based on fluxes measured previously with the FOS and the count rates given in version 5.0 of the FOS Manual (Fig. 1.2.3). Calibration Justification ------------------------- We request that wavelength calibration lamps are measured at each grating setting to minimize the wavelength uncertainties caused by grating shifts. We request that the lamp exposures are obtained DURING OCCULTATION to maximize the science target exposure times.
