Free format text (please update) We propose to carry out a UV spectroscopic study of a small number of nearby, radio-loud AGNs with double-peaked emission lines, in order to test competing models for the origin of the broad lines and to define the properties of the hosts in the UV. Radio-loud AGNs with double-peaked emission lines have been established as a class , with optical spectral properties reminiscent of LINERs, through the recent optical spectroscopic survey of Eracleous & Halpern (1994). Several models have been suggested to explain their unusual line profiles, but further progress in understanding the nature of these peculiar spectra is restricted by the fact that the Balmer lines are the only broad lines detected in optical spectra obtained from the ground, and the optical continuum is dominated by starlight. Observations of the UV emission lines and continuum can provide stringent tests of competing models by (1) measuring the profiles of lines from ions with different ionization potentials, and (2) measuring the non- stellar continuum, which seems different from that of most AGNs. These tests are particularly important for distinguishing between accretion disk and collimated outflow models for the origin of the double-peaked lines. If accretion disks are established as the their origin, double-peaked emission lines will provides us with the most direct view of AGN accretion disks, and will become a powerful tool for studying the disk structure and dynamics. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: In order to achieve our scientific objectives we need to obtain spectra with a high signal-to-noise ratio, which will allow us to study the profiles of the UV lines and the shape of the UV continuum in detail. The profiles of the UV emission lines should be of high enough quality to allow a sensitive comparison with the optical Balmer line profiles. The proposed wavelength coverage is 1150 - 3300 A, which includes several important emission lines, namely Ly-a, N V, C IV, He II, and Mg II. This coverage can be achieved using gratings G130H, G190H, and G270H, which will give a resolution of approximately 1, 1.5, and 2~\AA, respectively. The observations will be obtained through the 0\asecb.9 aperture in order to maximize efficiency and minimize target acquisition overheads. The contribution of starlight from the host galaxy is expected to be very small in the UV, even in the 0\asecb.9 aperture, because the stellar population is old. The choice of detector is dictated not only by considerations of quantum efficiency, but also by considerations of wavelength coverage. Hence, the BLUE digicon detector will be used in many cases with gratings G190H, and G270H, even though the RED digicon is more sensitive. This is because the RED digicon leaves a gap in the coverage between 1600 and 1650 A, where the C IV lines of Pictor A and 3C 390.3 fall. Switching between detectors can be done without any overhead since we are using the 0.9" aperture, and hence the target need not be re-acquired. The detector itself can be prepared for use while the target is being occulted by the earth. Real_Time_Justification: Expected count rates with different instrumental configurations were estimated for the proposed targets using the XCAL software package (Horne 1990), which simulates the response of the telescope and the focal plane instruments. The estimates were based on spectra of the target objects obtained from the IUE archive. Of the three proposed targets Pictor A is by far the brightest in the UV, while 3C 332 was not detected by IUE in the single short exposure devoted to it. Thus, the UV continuum level of 3C 332 was estimated by scaling down the UV continuum level of 3C 390.3 by a factor equal to the ratio of the optical fluxes of the two objects. The estimated count rates were used to estimate the exposure times needed to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of 20 per resolution element in the continuum (namely, in the 1300 - 1400$ A window for the G130H bandpass, the 1750 - 1850 A window for the G190H bandpass, and the 2600 - 2700 A window for the G270H bandpass). This requirement ensures that the signal-to-noise ratio in the high velocity wings of Ly-a will be about 45, which is adequate for a detailed comparison with optical line profiles. These estimates were made with the help of the appropriate worksheets; overheads due to guide star and target acquisitions, and housekeeping tasks were taken into account.
