Free format text The goal of this program is to use both the resolving power and the far-UV imaging capability of HST to study the nature of hot stellar populations and their radial gradients in the cores of globular clusters. We propose to survey dense globular cluster cores in the far-UV, B, and V passbands using WFPC2. We will discover all UV-bright stars at or above the turnoff, producing for the first time a nearly complete census of these populations. Magnitudes in the far-UV, B and V passbands permit an estimate of temperature, bolometric luminosity, and placement in the color-magnitude diagram. Numerous ground-based studies show that population gradients exist in concentrated globular cluster cores, and IUE spectra and some early HST data show they are also seen in the far-UV. Some centrally concentrated hot stellar population must be present, e.g., faint BHB stars, blue stragglers, stripped red giant cores, merged stars, or some new, as yet unknown type of object. These phenomena may be relevant for the origins of x- ray sources and millisecond pulsars in globular clusters. The data we propose to obtain would provide essential input for theoretical models. We should also be capable of detecting stars in brief UV-bright phases of evolution, as short as 10^5 - 10^6 yr. The frequency of UV-bright stars per Lsun\ can be used to place limits on their evolutionary lifetimes, thus constraining their origin. The normal far-UV phases of stellar evolution may help explain the UV-rising flux in elliptical galaxies. Questions ! Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We plan to reach past the turnoff in B and V for all of our targets. An additional image will be obtained in F218W. This filter has a relatively small red leak, 3 times the throughput of the Woods filter, and no vignetting. We plan to work at the 14 e^-/ADU gain channel to minimize saturation of bright stars. For the few clusters in the CVZ, we plan to image also using the Woods filter. These images will help us to check the temperatures and bolometric luminosities obtained using F218W, F439W, and F555W. Images must be obtained in a single position and orientation because the color information and clear identification is crucial. Our primary goal is the study of clusters with dense and post -collapse cores. However, a study of far-UV stellar evolution uncomplicated by core dynamics is also of great importance and we have therefore included a number of clusters where we would expect dynamical processes in the core to be less important. At the same time, they serve as a good comparison sample for the more concentrated ones. We will reach well below the turnoff in all Galactic globular clusters. The far -UV exposure will have a limiting magnitude of m(2500)=22 with S/N=3. This corresponds to V~ 18.5, typical for turnoff F stars in most globular clusters. Our limit for flat spectrum stars is B<23, and 1-2 mag fainter than this for UV- bright objects. Therefore, any UV-bright star discovered will also be detected in the B band. The PC chip will be centered on the cluster core, for maximum resolution there. The surrounding WFC chips will cover enough area to clearly establish the presence or absence of population gradients. The surrounding chips will also sample more total luminosity, thus increasing the chance we will discover stars in brief evolutionary phases.
