Free format text (please update) This proposal is for far-UV imaging and spectroscopy of Jupiter's north auroral emissions in the H Ly Alpha (1216 Angstrom) and H_2 Lyman and Werner bands (900-1650 Angstrom) at the same time as scheduled GALILEO UVS spectra of Jupiter in summer 1996. The HST data will extend our cycle 4 images and cycle 3 spectra of Jupiter's north auroral emissions, with specific sequences designed to follow up on existing observations: 1) a series of far-UV images of the north aurora over one Jovian rotation, at a time when Io's magnetic flux tube foot is visible to fix the geometry of the magnetic field and determine the variation in flux tube current with longitude and Io position, 2) GHRS G140L spectra to determine the hydrocarbon color ratio of three consistent emission features found in existing WFPC 2 far-UV images, and 3) GHRS Ech-A spectra of the H Ly Alpha line profile and H_2 Werner band ratios to measure the thermospheric dynamics and H_2 rotational temperature of the auroral emitting region. This in-depth study of the three regions will be complemented by the GALILEO UVS spectra at lower spectral resolution but higher angular resolution, EUV coverage, and different viewing geometry to study optical depth effects. Free format text (please update) Observing_Description: We will perform observations of Jupiter in the far-UV with WFPC 2 and GHRS at the same times as GALILEO Ultraviolet Spectrometer observations of Jupiter. The HST observations will consist of a series of WFPC 2 far-UV images, using F160BW and F160BW + F130LP, to image the auroral and airglow emissions from the H_2 Lyman and Werner band systems with and without emission from the H Ly Alpha line. These images will cover one Jovian rotation, and be scheduled at a time when the foot of the Io magnetic flux tube is visible on Jupiter, to map the magnetic field geometry in the north and south auroral zones using the emission from the Io foot as an fixed point indicator. One complete Jovian rotation (10 hours) is needed to accomplish this, and we will add short exposures with F218W to capture the emission distribution of the Rayleigh scattered sunlight in the F160BW bandpass for subtraction. (Filter F218W is proposed rather than F160BW + F165LP since experience has shown that the slightly longer wavelength range in F218W provides much higher signal for the subtraction image.) The second phase will be to obtain GHRS G140L and Ech-A spectra of three regions in Jupiter's auroral emissions identified in the initial WFPC 2 far-UV images, also near the time of GALILEO UVS spectra. At each location we will take G140L spectra at two wavelength ranges to obtain the H_2 color ratio (with some overlap to check for temporal variations), plus Ech-A spectra to measure the H Ly Alpha emission line profile and H_2 Werner band ratios, from which we will determine the H_2 rotational temperature in the emitting region. The three locations we have chosen are: 1) the "normal" northern auroral emission oval near 180degrees CML, 2) the inter-oval emission at higher latitudes, and 3) the Io foot bright spot at lower latitudes. The three locations will be observed at similar longitudes, so that we are mainly studying differences in latitude, particle precipitation, etc. Real_Time_Justification: The timing of these observations must be close in time (a few hours) to the GALILEO UVS observations, as indicated on the attached page, near 1 July 1996. Not knowing exactly how long cycle 5 will go, we are proposing now for these observations which occur at the nominal end of cycle 5. The F160BW WFPC 2 images and GHRS Ech-A spectra must also be obtained in dark time. Jupiter's far-UV auroral emissions can only be recorded from a space-based platform, and only at 0.1 arc sec resolution by HST. However, IR H_3^+ emissions imaged from the ground are important tracers of the ionospheric temperature, supplying complementary information to the direct (and prompt) excitation observed in the far-UV. We intend to propose for simultaneous (within some number of hours) ground-based near- IR H_3^+ images of Jupiter with the NSFCAM instrument on the IRTF. G.
