Examination of the individual spectral image by Dolan et al. (1995) shows that the flux ratio of A to B between 1981 and 1983 varies between 0.96 and 2.0 in the Lyman alpha line, and between 0.77 and 1.8 in O VI 1037 angstrom line. significant variations occur on a timescale of two weeks. The intensity ratio of A to B at any single epoch is often significantly different in the two emission lines. Accepting Q0957+561 as a gravitational lens impliesthat the flux in the Lyman alpha emission line must vary independently of that in the O VI line. We propose to monitor the two images of Q0957+561 with the FOS at 7 successive epochs on 2 week centers to confirm this interpretation and rule out microlensing as the cause of the variability. Establishing the independent variability of emission lines in quasars would be a discovery which would be directly applicable to the understanding of emission line forming regions in quasars.
