Abstract A spectrum of the nucleus of NGC 1068 will be obtained with GHRS in the R=20000 mode in the wavelength region 1468 - 1500 A, to search for the CO (2,0) fourth positive band absorptions. The Seyfert galaxy has been selected for observation because it is known to have strong molecular emission in the nuclear regions. In conjunction with existing mm-line observations of CO, our proposed HST data will be used to study the physical properties of the molecular gas lying in the direct line of sight to the galactic nucleus and to attempt a measure of the rotational temperature of CO in the circumnuclear molecular clouds which are associated with star formation. Observation of Mg II will also be carried out for calibration purposes. Description of proposed observations. This program can be performed only on the HST because it requires UV observations with high spectral resolution on extragalactic targets. No other instrumentation available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Our estimates indicate that the UV continuum fluxes of NGC 1068 should produce count rates per diode per second of 0.047 in the first-order of the G160M grating at the expected positions of the CO (2,0) band at 1483A. We could obtain a good signal to noise ratio S/N = 30 in an exposure time of about 6 hours. Therefore, we would like to observe these galaxies in high dispersion with a view to identification of the (2,0) band of the fourth positive system of the CO molecule and to get information about the line profile. We estimate that for a S/N ratio 30:1 our 3 sigma equivalent width limit is 25 mA, for 1% uncertainty in the continuum placement. We anticipate the CO lines to have strengths of the order 50-100 mA, well above our detection limit. The TAC gave 10 hours to the program which initially had two targets. We shall spend the ten hours on NGC 1068. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. We are going to use IRAF/STSDAS software at the STScI, and our own analysis software. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Blades is a member of the FOC IDT and is involved in several imaging programs. P2553: The Absorption Cross-Sections of Nearby Galaxies : Blades, Pettini & Bowen. P2638: Near ultraviolet spectrum of 0215+015 : Blades, Hunstead & Pettini. P2644: The environments of starburst galaxies : Norman, Heckman, Danly & Blades. P2563: SINS: The Supernova Intensive Study : Kirschner et al. None of these is related to the current proposal. The FOC GTO program should give important complementary data on the ultraviolet and optical morphologies of these two galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. New data-analysis procedures can be supplied by the PTI USSR Academy of sciences as well as research assistance during this project. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
