Scientific Justification. This activity will satisfy the following COSTAR SMOV Requirements: 1. Perform FOS fine focus scan. Take FOS spectra covering a FOS M1 focus range of -.5 mm to .5 mm centered on the current best focus position. 2. Determine new FOS optical focus. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. For each FOS channel (red and blue): A on-board target acquisition will be performed to center the target in the 4.3 arcsec aperture. Next a 4.3 arcsec aperture map will be taken for use in determining new FOS tilt and focus settings. The FOS M1 mirror will then be moved to each of the 5 scan points with spectra being taken at each point. Each data sequence will consist of the following: 1. Peakup in 0.3 aperture with G160L grating 2. Image mode G160L spectra in 0.3 and 4.3 apertures The scan grid is shown below. Each grid point is labeled with order of the focus scan #. The distance between points is 0.25 mm. X(-0.50)-03 X(-0.25)-02 X(0.0)-01 X(+0.25)-05 X(+0.50)-04 This sequence is performed first in the FOS/RD channel, then in the FOS/BL channel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisites: 1. COSTAR/FOS Fine Alignment X-Tilt/Y-Tilt (4747). Real-time Requirements: realtime uplink needed for move to best FOS COSTAR position at start of observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Engineering data will be reduced using the ESS and the COSTAR data analysis system to generate standard sorts and plots. Sorts and plots will be used to: 1. Verify FOS M1 mechanism movements and performance 2. Verify COSTAR electrical performance Science data will be analyzed using the COSTAR/FOS data analysis system. The following analysis will be performed: 1. Calculate the centroid and encircled energy the image. 2. Calculate the ratio of the 0.3 to 4.3 aperture flux for each scan point. Plot the results vs. focus position. 3. Use the results of steps 1 and 2 and the COSTAR opto-mechanical model to determine new positions for the focus, X-Tilt, and Y Tilt mechanisms.
