Jefferys UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS USA 512-471-4461 PROFESSOR ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract The goal of this project is to determine trigonometric parall axes for several Hyades cluster members and to define the Population I zero age main sequence. The ZAMS is used to determine the distances to open clusters and to establish the zero point of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relationship, which is the fundamental distance indicator in the universe. A secondary g oal of this project is to search for new Hyades cluster members which mig ht be as faint at the 25th magnitude, or M(v)=22. This part of the project will be accomplished through coordinated parallel observations with the WFC to determine proper motions of very faint stars over a one year base line. FGS parallax observations of the thirteen Hyades members should yield an error in the distance modulus of the Hyades Cluster good to approximately 0.014 mag. This accuracy should be sufficient to eliminate the Hyades as a source of error in determining the galactic distance scale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Cycle 1 5.00 hours Cycle 2 21.67 hours Cycle 3 8.67 hours Cycle 4 13.00 hours Cycle 5 8.67 hours ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Ground-based parallaxes are in the best cases limited to an accuracy of 0.002 arcsec, which is some 4 times poorer than the projected accuracy from the ST. Based on this accuracy, we would have to determine parallaxes for about 350 stars in the Hyades in order to determine the distance modulus to 0.01 mag. This is not really possible since the total stellar content of the cluster is also about 350 and many of the stars are too bright to observe accurately. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Parallax observations must be made during the times when the parallax factor is at a maximum in order to achieve the highest possible accuracy in the parallax. The time tolerance of +/- 21 days in the observation dates is already at the maximum level that is acceptable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. All of the FGS observations must be uninterrupted in order to minimize the effects of thermal drifts in the ST structure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Computational facilities and the ADRS software package. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. In order to obtain the highest possible accuracy, it is necessary to operate in a purely differential manner. In the case of the FGS, this means that the target field should always be placed in precisely the same part of the FGS pickle. In this case we are most concerned with local errors in the field distortion and encoders. These errors can be minimized if we are careful to keep our measurements as differential as possible. To accomplish this we must orient the ST at the same roll angle for each observation at epochs 1, 3 and 5 and 180 degrees from that angle for epochs 2 and 4. Since each observation will take about 10 minutes, it is possible to complete all of the 4 or 6 observations for one epoch during one orbit. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Trigonometric parallaxes will be obtained for about 10 Hyades cluster members to determine the distance modulus of the Hyades cluster to about 0.01 mag. WFC exposures will be taken of about 20 regions in parallel mode to search for new faint members of the cluster to about the 25th magnitude using proper motions as the membership criterion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
