Abstract This proposal defines a series of observations that will measure for the first time the wavelength offsets that occur for a target observed in the LSA, relative to the wavelengths that are assigned for SSA observations. The objective is to allow high resolution spectra to be obtained using the LSA, while achieving wavelength accuracy comparable to the SSA. The test uses the UV standard star Mu Columbae, with target acquisitions performed using mirror A1. Four important wavelength regions, 1210 (Ly alpha), 1240 (N V), 1400 (Si IV) and 1545 (C IV) are measured with the star in both the LSA and the SSA. Echelle A is used in this proposal. Description of proposed observations. The star will be acquired with Mirror A1, using an RTB search a double locate, and two image mode maps. With the target in the LSA the carrousel will be rotated to the desired wavelength. A wavelength calibration with lamp SC2 will be done, followed by an FP-SPLIT series starting at the same central wavelength. The substep pattern uses four samples per diode width and two background bins. The exposure time should produce approximately 10000 counts per diode in each spectral bin in the continuum. Four wavelength settings will be observed. The target will then be peaked up in the SSA, and the same series of exposures will be repeated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The primary goal is to measure the offset in wavelength between the spectra observed in the two apertures. The current calibration routines incorporate carefully measured offsets for the SSA relative to the onboard lamps. The offset for the LSA has never been determined for the side 1 gratings. We will carefully reduce, calibrate and merge the individual subexposures. The spectra corresponding to the same central wavelengths will then be compared to derive any shift. This shift will be determined at each of four wavelengths. The data will also allow the detector granularity vectors to be derived at the four wavelengths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
