These objects are believed LINE_5: to be recently formed low mass stars that have become exposed by the LINE_6: intense UV radiation field of the hot stars responsible for excitation LINE_7: of the HII region. LINE_1: Our first observational goal is to obtain the highest possible LINE_2: angular resolution images of externally illuminated protoplanetary LINE_3: disks embedded in the Orion Nebula. We will re-observe 3 known LINE_4: disk/YSO systems using WFPC2 in its high resolution mode for imges LINE_5: in the red portion of the spectrum, and FOC at UV wavelengths. LINE_6: We plan to obtain images with unprecedented angular resolution in the LINE_7: emission lines of OII [2470], CII [2326] (the brightest UV lines in HII LINE_8: regions), in a filter which contains HI [2763,2829], Mg [2852], and LINE_9: MgII [2798, 2803], and in the UV continuum where few emission lines LINE_10: exist. The enhanced scattering efficiency in the UV will be used to LINE_11: search for small scale structure in the scattered light from the disk, LINE_12: and to probe the disk in silhouette against the background scattered LINE_13: light. We will also image 3 systems in OIII [5007], OI [6300], LINE_14: H-alpha, NII, and SII [6717, 6734], and in a broadband longwave filter LINE_15: (FOC) to produce the highest possible resolution images. LINE_16: Our second goal is to probe the UV emission line spectrum of LINE_17: externally illuminated disk/YSO systems. We propose to obtain LINE_18: low resolution (R=1200) UV to visible spectra of 3 sources using FOS. LINE_19: The emission line spectrum in the UV and optical bands provides key LINE_20: diagnostics to the physical conditions in the circumstellar / proto- LINE_21: planetary disk, in the disk corona, and in the ablation flow above it. The entire core of Orion is full of LINE_6: YSOs, many of which are potential sources of outflows and HH objects. LINE_7: Our parallel observations are set up so that WFPC2 looks at LINE_8: the region of M42 directly north of the Trapezium, where there LINE_9: are many young stars, HH objects, and optical outflows.
