Enter abstract text: use < 80 characters per line LINE_1: We propose to construct a deep far-UV color magnitude-diagram LINE_2: of resolved sources in the centers of M31 and M32. These data LINE_3: will be used, in conjunction with spectroscopy obtained by the LINE_4: Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, to provide constraints on the mix LINE_5: of stars responsible for the far-UV emission in old, metal-rich LINE_6: stellar populations. Our inference from the existing data is LINE_7: that the sources resolved in Cycle-1 and 2 FOC images are mostly LINE_8: low-mass PAGB stars. Such stars probably produce less than LINE_9: 60% of the far-UV flux from M31, with the remainder coming from LINE_10: PEAGB, AGB-Manque, and EHB stars. Our proposed observations LINE_11: are deep enough to resolve PEAGB stars and AGB-Manque stars LINE_12: and provide the first direct evidence for these modes of LINE_13: stellar evolution. The relative numbers of these stars, LINE_14: the color of the remaining diffuse component, and the spectral LINE_15: energy distribution measured by HUT, will permit a precise LINE_16: estimate of the contribution from EHB stars. Comparison of LINE_17: the results from M31 and M32 will provide important insight LINE_18: into the differences in the evolution of the stellar populations LINE_19: in these two galaxies. Provide a detailed description of the proposed observing plan. ! This description is used during scheduling to ensure that the ! observations are implemented properly, so please answer with care. LINE_1: The FOC will be used in f/96 mode with the F175W and F320W filters and LINE_2: zoom mode (0.028 x 0.014 arcsec pixels) to obtain images of the centers LINE_3: of M31 and M32 in the far UV. The exposure times are dictated by the LINE_4: desire to obtain photometry to 10% accuracy for AGB-Manque stars near LINE_5: their peak luminosities. For an assumed reddening of E(B-V) = 0.11, LINE_6: this corresponds to an ST magnitude limit of 23.2 at 1750A. LINE_7: LINE_8: We have carefully considered other camera and filter combinations, and LINE_9: chosen the mode which gives the shortest total exposure time for the LINE_10: expected Cycle-4 capabilities. However, we have assumed that f/48 mode LINE_11: of FOC will not be available for imaging during cycle 4. If it becomes LINE_12: available, we may consider using it, as the shorter wavelength and good LINE_13: throughput of the F150W filter, combined with the larger field, makes LINE_14: this mode particularly efficient for our project. LINE_15: LINE_16: Parallel WFPC-2 observations are requested through the F160W filters LINE_17: and the F300W filters. The parallel observations are of direct LINE_18: relevance to the issues we are addressing with our primary observations LINE_19: and our observations in previous cycles. In M31 the parallel LINE_20: observations will sample a different portion of the bulge, with little LINE_21: disk contamination, but presumably with an appreciably lower LINE_22: metallicity than the central region. A specific prediction, which can LINE_23: be tested even if the observations are not terribly deep, is that PAGB QUESTION: 3 SECTION: 2 LINE_1: stars should account for a larger fraction of the far-UV flux in this LINE_2: outer region than in the center. The M32 observations will be affected LINE_3: by M31 disk contamination, which we plan minimize by specifying LINE_4: an orientation range that puts the parallel exposures on the LINE_5: side of M32 that is away from M31. While the parallel observations are LINE_6: not essential for our project, they would be a valuable addition and we LINE_7: are well equipped to analyze them in a timely fashion. LINE_8: LINE_9: The WFPC2 observations should be scheduled so as not to LINE_10: reduce the exposure time available for the primary by more LINE_11: than 20%. If the WFPC2 observations interfere at a greater LINE_12: level, or make it difficult to schedule the primary observations LINE_13: in some other way, please contact the PI. LINE_14: LINE_15: We wish to start the observing program with a few short exposures, LINE_16: early in the cycle, then do the bulk of the program several months LINE_17: later. Motivations for this strategy are as follows: 1) to allow LINE_18: a test for variability among the brighter sources, 2) to evaluate LINE_19: the pointing position and allow time to modify the position of the LINE_20: later exposures if there are problems with patchy dust or source LINE_21: confusion, and 3) to give some early results that will allow us LINE_22: to test the predictions of our unscheduled cycle-3 program. QUESTION: 4 ! Justification of need for HST observations. SECTION: 1 LINE_1: The stars we propose to observe are detectable only in the UV. While LINE_2: these two galaxies have been observed numerous times in the LINE_3: ultraviolet, only HST is capabile of resolving the individual sources. LINE_4: LINE_5: The integrated spectra of M31 and M32 have been measured by IUE LINE_6: \acite{Johnson79; Welch 1982; Burstein 1988}. M31 was observed by by LINE_7: HUT \acite{Ferguson 1991 ApJ; Ferguson Davidsen 1993 ApJ}. LINE_8: Low-resolution far-UV images were obtained from a sounding rocket LINE_9: \acite{BCHHOS85} and more recently from the UIT \acite{O'Connell 1991 LINE_10: Stellar; O'Connell 1992 ApJ}. No resolved sources were detected in LINE_11: these images. Far-UV images have been taken in the last two years with LINE_12: HST. In the M31 F175W image \acite{King 1992 ApJ}, 137 sources were LINE_13: detected in the $44 \times 44\arcsec$ FOC $f/48$ field of view. LINE_14: Estimates from this image suggest that resolved sources provide roughly LINE_15: 15-20\% of the total flux at 1750\ang. More recent images were obtained LINE_16: at 1500\ang with the F130LP+F150W filters \acite{Bertola92}. These LINE_17: images were not as deep as expected, and the field of view was $22 LINE_18: \times 22\arcsec$, so fewer sources were detected. Preliminary LINE_19: estimates from these images suggest that the resolved sources LINE_20: contribute a much larger proportion of the far-UV flux LINE_21: \acite{Bertola92}. LINE_22: QUESTION: 4 ! Justification of need for HST observations. SECTION: 2 LINE_1: While we expect our Cycle-3 FOC observations to resolve much of the LINE_2: discrepancy about the contribution of the resolved sources to the total LINE_3: far-UV flux, the depth of these images will be insufficient to sample LINE_4: the PEAGB and AGB-Manqu\'e star populations, thought from the HUT LINE_5: spectrum to be producing most of the far-UV flux. Deep observations LINE_6: with the refurbished FOC in Cycle-4 will allow such stars to be LINE_7: detected and the resulting color--magnitude diagram will test models LINE_8: for their mass and temperature distribution. LINE_9: LINE_10: For exposure time calculations, see phase-1 proposal. QUESTION: 5 ! Description of special scheduling requirements. SECTION: 1 ! Describe any special scheduling requirements such as real-time, time-critical, ! dark time, uninterrupted, Target of Opportunity, or Continuous Viewing Zone ! observations. LINE_1: We wish to start the observing program with a few short exposures, LINE_2: early in the cycle, then do the bulk of the program several months LINE_3: later. Motivations for this strategy are as follows: 1) to allow LINE_4: a test for variability among the brighter sources, 2) to evaluate LINE_5: the pointing position and allow time to modify the position of the LINE_6: later exposures if there are problems with patchy dust or source LINE_7: confusion, and 3) to give some early results that will allow us LINE_8: to test the predictions of our unscheduled cycle-3 program. LINE_9: LINE_10: The targets become visible at the begining of June. We would LINE_11: therefore like to schedule the first observations in June, and the LINE_12: later ones a few months later (the orientation requirement LINE_13: naturally places them in the Oct-Feb time frame). LINE_14: LINE_15: We realize that the short exposures will not have the same roll LINE_16: or parallel exposure positions as the later long exposures. That LINE_17: is acceptable. LINE_18: LINE_19: The exposure times on individual lines in the exposure log LINE_20: have been tuned, in consultation with Doug Van Orsow, to LINE_21: facilitate constructing sensible SU's for these observations. QUESTION: 6 ! Description of special calibration exposures. SECTION: 1 QUESTION: 7 ! Data reduction and analysis plans. SECTION: 1 LINE_1: See phase 1 proposal. QUESTION: 8 ! Additional comments or special requests. SECTION: 1 LINE_1: While observations of both galaxies are probably essential for LINE_2: unravelling the effects of age and metallicity on the hot star LINE_3: population, the M32 observations are of lower priority than M31 if any LINE_4: exposures must be dropped or deferred due to the demands on Cycle-4 LINE_5: observing time.
