Description of proposed observations. The first objective, to provide a baseline from which any changes will be compared, is met by collecting TSCAN data over the FOV of each FGS, prior to the Servicing mission (SM). After the astronauts complete their tasks and the telescope is released, another set of Transfer scans is requires to determine if changes in the signature of the S-Curves occurred during the servicing activity. This information will allow for interim changes in FGS gains and for trouble- shooting if it is discovered that the S-Curves had significant changes. The third set of Transfer Scans, performed after the final focus maneuver, is needed to compute and optimize the working set of FGS gains and peak limiters for guidance. The secondary objectives are to provide initial astrometry K-factors and, if required, to perform a cursory analysis of aberration changes. THIS TEST IS REQUIRED FOR FGS'S 1, 2 AND 3 The current SMOV timeline forces the data to be acquired during specific times. Prior to launch obtain the TSCANS for each FGS during the week of November 29, 1993. The second set must be collected between December 18 through December 23 1993. The final focus set of TSCANS should be obtained between February 23, 1994 and March 7, 1994. If the launch slips, this schedule slips accordingly. NOTE: NOT LIKELY TO OCCUR BEFORE SM (PSTANLEY 10/5/93) The target for this activity is M35, an ecliptic field. At the anti-sun orientation the FGS FOV will rotate by 180{SYMBOL 176 \f "Symbol"}. Hence the stars observed in early December in a given FGS, will be flipped 180 degrees in late December in the same FGS. The common set of targets between early and late December will reside in the central two thirds of the FOV (also known as the football). Stars at the outer azimuthal edges of the FGS's will not be common between early and late December. Still, some common targets in the football will provide enough azimuthal information for field dependent changes between early and late December, so that temporary FGS gain setting can be made. For the critical comparison between late December and late February, when the final secondary mirror move will be accomplished, all stars in the sets will be common. The range for the 3 observations are, the week of November 29, 1993 for the baseline observations, December 18 through December 23 for the post servicing observations and February 23 through March 7, 1994 for the post secondary mirror move observations. A potential problem exists with the magnetometer restriction at the anti-sun point. This issue may prohibit the December 18 through 23 observations. ENCLOSED ARE THREE SEQUENCES, ONE FOR EACH FGS. A comment at the beginning of each new proposal indicates which FGS is the Astrometry unit. 1) Perform the first observation set in SMS 93.333, the week of Nov. 29, 1993 in each of the three FGS's with specified rolls. THESE BEFORE SM OBSERVATIONS ARE NOT LIKELY TO OCCUR (PSTANLEY) 2.) When each FGS is used as the astrometer, position HST to place the reference star at the designated location. Acquire guide stars in FINE LOCK. 3.) Observe 10 stars in TRANS mode with 5 scans per star using the PUPIL. Repeat the observations on 5 of the ten stars in TRANS mode with 5 scans per star using the clear (F583W) filter. 4.) Repeat the observing scenario for each FGS with the designated targets.. 5.) Repeat the observing scenario 1 through 4 after December 31, 1993 or after completion of Servicing Mission (SM) . 6.) Repeat the observing scenario 1 through 4 after February 23, 1994 or after the secondary mirror is placed in its final position. For the POS TARG values of the reference star, the centers of the FGS's were defined as, FGS 1 X = 0.0 and Y = 726.0 arc seconds FGS 2 X = 5.1 and Y = 725.16 arc seconds FGS 3 X = -3.79 and Y = 728.96 arc second The attached Pickles plots display the sign convention for the POS TARG target. The POS TARG values are relative to the central FGS positions. A negative X value lies on the side of the FGS which contains the Wavefornt Sensor and the internal test source. A negative Y value for POS TARG implies that the POS TARG star is below the center point of the FGS FOV, as defined in lines 15 through 17. Changes in the S-Curves that affect guidance must be monitored so that adequate gain corrections can be achieved prior to critical Fine Lock SMOV activities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Prerequisite: FGS Guide Star Acquisition Verification (proposal 5241). The orientations apply to M35 as the target. NOTE: THE "BEFORE THE SERVICING MISSION" OBSERVATIONS HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THIS PROPOSAL ALTHOUGH IT IS UNLIKELY THAT THEY WILL BE EXECUTED. Comments about their unlikely scheduling have been added by P. Stanley prior to entry in the data base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Initial data capture and conversion to engineering units will be performed by PASSOPS. The data will be transmitted to HDOS via the GSFC LAN and AP7. Any changes in the S-Curves that affect guidance will be monitored with software that resides at HDOS. If K-factor modifications are required, the HDOS software will compute the new values and transmit them to PASSOPS via the GSFC LAN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s).
