Abstract This proposal defines a brief test to verify that the carrousel positions for GHRS side 1 optical elements can be properly commanded from the side 2 encoder and electronics. The test uses the internal spectral lamp SC2, and one exposure each with gratings G140L, G140M and Ech-A. These exposures are identical to the standard wavecal/spybal observations. Photoscan observations will be made with mirrors N1 and A1. One final ACCUM exposure will be made with mirror N1. Description of proposed observations. The proposal specifies one observation each for gratings G140L, G140M, Ech-A, two observations for mirror N1, and one for mirror A1. All observations use lamp SC2 as the source. The three grating exposures are exactly the standard wavecal/spybal procedures which were in use during SV and cycle 0 prior to the carrousel drive electronics problem. The photoscans will scan a short region of the photocathode centered on the expected Y position of the target acquisition images. The carrousel must be rotated to the position indicated in the comments (side 2 encoder values). These will place the images near diode 30 for the acquisition mirrors. The ACCUM observation with mirror N1 will have the image near the center of the diode array. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The execution of this proposal should be the first use of side 1 which requires specific carrousel positions, other than the SAFE position for darks or intflats. The cross strapped commanding of the carrousel operation to allow side 1 optical elements to be positioned by the side 2 electronics was developed, but never tested against the flight hardware before the side 1 lvps problem caused the suspension of all side 1 activities. This proposal is a simple check that the commanding is correctly in place, and that the correct encoder positions are computed. If the results of this test are favorable, the spectral lamp mini- functional tests may be executed to refine the calibration functins. Therefore execute after side 1 high-voltage turn on and before 5273. This proposal requires OK from J. Skapik before execution. Program can be executed PRIOR to the COSTAR/GHRS deplyoment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. The primary goal is to verify that the images are found in the expected locations. For the spectroscopic modes the requested wavelength should fall near the center of the diode array. Inspection of the spectra should give a quick verification, and a formal wavecal solution will give a precise value for the central wavelength. We expect the indicated wavelength to be within +/- 20 diodes of the center corresponding to +/- 1 mod 4 carrousel position. The photo scans should show the images near diode 30, with peak counts in the fourth bin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10.
