Abstract Starting from a specific attitude, HST will be commanded to perform a series of maneuvers around three mutually orthogonal axes in order to acquire RGA data and FHST attitudes to compute the initial FHST/RGA scale-factor-alignment matrices. The results of the analysis will be used to update the PDB and the flight software, and are necessary for future observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5253c PI: Martin Gakenheimer Proposal Title: INITIAL FHST/RGA SCALE-FACTOR-ALIGNMENT DETERMINATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Art Bradley ALLIED-SIGNAL AEROSPACE USA Martin Gakenheimer ALLIED-SIGNAL TECHNICAL SERVICES USA Lou Hallock GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER USA Ed Kimmer ALLIED-SIGNAL TECHNICAL SERVICES USA Gary Welter COMPUTER SCIENCES CORPORATION USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. This activity is a required step in the determination of the RGA alignment and calibration parameters necessary for the proper processing of attitude sensor data in the onboard Pointing Control System and in the ground PASS software. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Two sets of slews, separated by 24 hours for PASSOPS processing, are required. The first set will provide data to perform the calibration and the second set is intended to validate the initial set of results. For each slew in both sets, contiguous RGA data is required encompassing an initial FHST map scheduled as close to the slew as possible, the slew, and a final FHST map generated as close to the slew as possible. No FHST updates or other intervening activities should be scheduled. Minimally all FHST maps require 2 FHSTs concurrently mapping for at least 5 minutes. Continuous ETR coverage is required for each slew encompassing both the FHST maps and the slew. Realtime data is used as a backup to the ETR data. Each slew starts from the end of the previous slew and is specified by its destination in ecliptic coordinates. The current targets are specified relative to the sun's position with azimuth angles defined in a counter - clockwise ascending order as viewed from the north ecliptic pole and with positive elevations in the hemisphere north of the ecliptic plane. The targets have been selected with a 5 degree pad to avoid the solar and anti-sun constraints that reflect magnetometer and SADE constraints. Each slew target should be implemented to within 1 degree of the coordinates specified with HST in an optimal roll orientation. The padded constraint cones are 62 degrees and 40 degrees from the solar and anti-sun regions, respectively. The slew sequence follows. Calibration sequence: Proposal-preparation slew to an azimuth of 180 degrees and an elevation of 40 degrees. Slew to azimuth of 140 degrees and an elevation of 0 degrees. Slew to an azimuth of 62 degrees and an elevation of 0 degrees. Slew to an azimuth of 0 degrees and an elevation of 62 degrees. In three steps slew back to the starting points of the fourth slew, then the third slew and then the second slew. (HST should now be pointing to an azimuth of 180 degrees and an elevation of 40 degrees.) Verification slews: Repeat the proposal-preparation slew assuming other users are slewing HST during the 24 hour period between the calibration and verification slews. Similar to the 6 calibration slews, slew to (220,0), then (298,0) and then (0,62), then slew to (298,0), (220,0) and (180,40) where (220,0) represents an azimuth of 220 degrees and an elevation of 0 degrees. In lieu of points with positive elevations referenced to the ecliptic plane, positive declinations in celestial coordinates will suffice. (As a rsult the roll-yaw maneuvers around the constraint regions will typically not be 90 degrees.) If a starting point off the ecliptic plane is difficult, specific slew ordering is not important. At least four of the calibration slews, including a rotation in the ecliptic plane, a rotation about the anti-sun constraint region and a rotation about the sun constraint region are required for processing. PASSOPS requires 24 hours to compute the RGA alignments and scale factors for the operational gyros and to uplink tables to the DF224. The verification slews will be used to confirm these results and to provide additional data to refine these results. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. ETR data is required continously for each data interval of a pair of FHST maps and slew in between. ETR dumps need to be scheduled with MOC personnel to avoid track changes because they cause gaps in the data intervals. An ETR dump needs to be scheduled soon after the 6 calibration slews and soon after the 6 verifications slews to expedite the ground processing. The real-time data, scheduled to the maximum possible extent, will be used to fill in any unexpected gaps in the ETR data. Telemetry format of PN is required during the data intervals. At other times AN format is acceptable. For the attitude computation, it is important that at least 2 FHST's be simultaneously unocculted both before and after the slew with telemetry in PN format being recorded on the ETR for the entire intervals of simultaneous FHST maps. Targets are specified as offsets in celestial coordinates from the sun, however, ecliptic offsets are desired. Page 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data reductionwill be performed in the PASS system. The initial FHST/RGA scale- factor- alignment tables for use on HST are expected to be available within 24 hours after the completion of the calibration slews. Within 12 hours after the verification slews, the implementation of the intial tables will be confirmed and possibly a refined result will be available. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. This proposal requires a reasonable estimate of the FHST/FHST alignments for the attitude determination. For the servicing mission, map data from this proposal can be combined with map data from the FHST/FHST alignment activity (G034) to refine FHST/FHST alignment estimate prior to computing the FHST/RGA alignment. The results of this proposal are required before HST can be accurately slewed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
