Abstract This proposal will measure the amount that the spectrum of an extended source "falls off" the GHRS diode array. This calibration will be done with G200M near 2200 A and with G270M near 3200 A. The target used is the bright earth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 5227c PI: Dr. Stephen J. Hulbert Proposal Title: GHRS EXTENDED OBJECT SPECTRUM ALIGNMENT TEST ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Stephen Hulbert STSCI USA Dr. David Soderblom STSCI USA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2. Scientific Justification. The goal of this test is to calibrate the loss of flux from the ends of a spectrum produced by an object that completely fills the LSA. A series of overlapping spectra will be taken; this series will consist of three spectra whose central wavelengths differ by half the length of an individual spectrum. Additionally, a spectrum will be taken in the SSA at the second wavelength position of the series followed by a repeat in the LSA. The SSA will provide essentially a point source and permit an evaluation of the flux falloff. The sequence of spectra is: LSA-W1;LSA-W2;SSA-W2;LSA-W2:LSA-W3, where W1, W2, and W3 refer to the central wavelengths of the spectra. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The test consists of the following steps: 1. Blind pointing at earth 2a. three overlapping spectra with G200M 2b. LSA-SSA-LSA spectra with G200M 3. five spectra with G270M Note: G200M series of spectrum broken up to fit into separate orbits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Exposure times are dictated by the low surface brightness of the earth at 2200 A, the need to get a signal-to-noise ratio of 15, and the need to fit a series of spectra into a single orbit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
