Scientific Justification. The calibrations are needed to assess the impact of scattered longer-than-3000 A. continuum light on FOS observations of weak UV sources. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Several late-type stars will be observed with the FOS UV gratings. Observations of the solar-type star 16 Cyg B with FOS/BL G130H, G190H, and G270H and FOS/RD G190H and G270H will be particularly useful in assessing scattered-light contamination in FOS UV observations of solar system targets. However, the scattering contamination in FOS UV observations of other classes of objects that contain late-type spectra (e.g., ellipticals) is also important. We will also observe two additional later-type spectra, specifically Gamma Draconis (spectral type K4III) as for 16 Cyg B and G130H and G190H observations of Alpha Orionis (spectral type M2I); all 3 stars have been observed with the "solar-blind" HRS Side 1. Since HRS Side 1 is insensitive to wavelengths longward of approximately 2000 A., any additional light detected in the FOS observations is attributable to longer-wavelength continuum light scattered off the FOS gratings. An attempt will be made to calibrate the detected scattered light with the visible color of the object. One of the objects, 16 Cyg B will be observed throughout the visible with FOS/BL to provide a direct instrumental comparison between total detected long-wavelength counts and scattered long-wavelength counts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Description of special scheduling requirements.
