Abstract Observations of planetary upper atmospheres through stellar occultations are of interest because they provide information about the radiative and dynamical processes at work in these rarefied regions (number density range: 10super13 - 10super15 cmsuper-3), which could be otherwise measured only through direct atmospheric probe launched from a spacecraft. One of the problems with interpretation of the temperature profiles obtained from ground-based occultation observations has been that the numerical inversion of the data is highly sensitive to photometric errors--especially in obtaining the mean temperature of the atmosphere. The much greater stability of photometry that is possible with the ST will allow us to obtain more accurate temperature profiles and permit a comparison of the atmospheric structures of the Jovian planets with much greater precision than has been possible in the past. We propose a series of three occultation observations for each Jovian ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. This proposal contains repeats of backscan observations which had failed in 4257. The observation proceeds as follows: 1) Acquire center of Uranus using onboard acquisition. 2) Offset to starting point indicated (along path occulted star took). 3) Scan along path in zigzag pattern indicated, mapping the scattered light from Uranus. These data will be used to determine the contribution of Uranus scattered light to the occultation profile obtained in 4257. Note: backscan specifications here assume the NEW COMMANDING. That is, they do not take into account instrumental overheads. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. We can achieve a much better signal-to-noise ratio for the temperature profiles than has been possible from the ground for the following reasons: (i) the greatly improved photometric stability of ST photometry, which will substantially reduce the errors in the numerical inversion of the data that is necessary to obtain the temperature profiles; (ii) our ability to reject background light from the planetary limb by employing small focal plane apertures; and (iii) the absence of scintillation noise, which has strong components at frequencies comparable to the occultation timescale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. A prior scan over 10 arc-seconds is needed to map the scattered light field, which is needed for the data reduction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. Data will be reduced and analyzed at MIT with the DEC 5000 belonging to the planetary astronomy group. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Data reduction and analysis will be supported on computer facilities at MIT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Observations of the upper atmospheres of Mars and the Jovian planets with HSP through stellar occultations will provide infromation about the radiative and dynamical processes in this region. The temperature profiles obtained will allow testing of the various transfer models for each planet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
