Abstract FOS will be used to measure the ultraviolet spectrum of active galaxies. Complementary and simultaneous visual and infrared data will also be obtained. The profile of the emission lines will provide information on the broadening mechanism and dynamics of the emitting regions. Comparison of the profile and radial velocity of the emission lines produced by species of different ioni- zation potential will allow the study of the thermal and density stratification of the emitting regions. The degree of asymmetry of lines at different wave- lengths will allow the absorbing material be identified and located. The ratio of the UV to visible lines, such as those for O I and He II will be used to estimate the reddening along the line of sight. Ratio of emission line fluxes will be compared with models in order to derive the ionization mechanism, elec- tron temperature and density, and chemical composition of the emitting gas. The emission line properties of low luminosity will be compared with those of high luminosity objects in order to investigate the covering factor and evolutionary effects. The continumm spectrum from the UV to the IR will be used to establish the emission mechanism and the nature and luminosity of the energy source. The weak absorption lines will be used to establish the physical conditions and the chemical composition of the gas in: our Galaxy, intergalactic medium and the parent galaxy. Absorption produced by broad line clouds will give information on cloud motion and covering factor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. Cycle 4: Object: AKN120 Exposures: 1-4 Cycle 4: Object: MRK335 Exposures: 5-8 All these objects have semi-point-source nucleus. The FOS blue detector will be used with the G130H, G190H, and G270H grating to obtain high signal-to-noise UV spectra of two Seyfert 1 galaxies. The 1.0 arcsec circular aperture will be used to obtain accurate absolute fluxes for comparison with ground-based spectra. The resolution (R=1200) will be high enough to deconvolve broad and narrow components and to provide many resolution elements across the broad-line profiles. The exposure times will yield signal-to-noise ratios of about 20 in the continuum and 40 at the peaks of the strong lines, which will enable the measurement of weak emission and absorption lines, and the detailed study of the broad-line profiles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. Data for Fairall 9 (cycle 0) will be published shortly after they are taken and analyzed, so they can be released according to normal procedures. However, for the cycle 1 objects, we need to combine the data from all of them for several studies, such as comparison of line profiles and their correlation with luminosity (e.g. with optical observations of high redshift quasars), the range of properties of active galaxies and the statistical significance of various observed phenomena, etc. Therefore, we request that the data for the cycle 1 objects not be released until one year after all the exposures are taken and all the data sent to our group. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. FOS UV spectra of active galaxies, complemented by visible and IR data will be used to study: the dynamics, physical conditions (and their stratification), chemical composition and the emission mechanism(s) of the emitting regions. Reddening in the emitting regions and along the line of sight will be estimated. The effects of luminosity and covering factor will be investigated. The absorption lines will be used to estimate the covering factor in the broad line region and the gas along the line of sight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
