Abstract One of groundbased, long-focus photographic astrometry's most challenging and most challenged research activities has been the search for "unseen" companions to nearby stars based upon analyses of perturbations in their observed proper motions. We propose to examine with FGS in the TRANS mode six late-type dwarf stars claimed to have low-mass companions of magnitudes and angular separations such as to make direct detection by FGS scans feasible. Any direct detection would not only extend importantly our knowledge on stars of very low mass and luminosity, but would also provide proof of the validity of a classical observational technique widely used in searches for other planetary systems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. FGS will be used in the TRANS mode to obtain sets of multiple, continuous scans across targets thought to possess close, faint companions. Line 1 of the exposure logsheet defines sequences of scans with a scan-rate of 0.04 arcsec/sec and a scan-length of 1.2 arcsec per interferometer axis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. While a few "unseen" companions of small Deltam and large separation associated with nearby stars have been found by ground-based imaging, the targets here proposed for observation will require the performance characteristics and the operating environment of ST to have a reasonable expectation of success. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. Special scheduling requirements, while neither very urgent nor very stringent, are made to enhance the probability of detection of "unseen" companions by adjusting observing intervals to expected orbital periods and thus the rate of orbital motions of suspected companions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. Special plates will be obtained with the 1-meter Astrometric Reflector of the University of Virginia and will be made available as required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). Existing computer facilities will be used at the investigator's home institutions, as will special software developed for analyses of these observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. Nearby red dwarf stars will be observed with FGS in the trans/moving mode in an attempt to detect "unseen" low-mass companions whose presence is indicated by analyses of perturbations found by long-focus photographic astrometry. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
