Abstract We propose to take FOC images of a small number of nearby elliptical galaxies. We will investigate the central luminosity profiles of the galaxies at the highest possible resolution to look for evidence of resolved cores, non-isothermal profiles, point-like nuclei and stellar disks and dust lanes. We will observe in two colors (F342W and F430W) to look for color gradients in the cores, and to look for dust reddening and hot stars. We will also observe selected objects in the ultraviolet (F220W) to investigate the distribution of ultraviolet light and to compare it to the visible light distribution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. We propose to take FOC images of several nearby elliptical galaxies using the F/96 relay and F430W and F342W filters. Some objects will also be observed using the F220W filter to map the distribution of ultraviolet emission. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Our target objects have all been observed with the best-possible ground-based resolution and show either unresolved cores or else interesting profiles. Only HST can do UV imaging. Since we do not know the luminosity distribution in the cores of these objects at HST's resolution, we cannot predict accurate surface brightnesses. Experience with observations of similar objects in earlier cycles indicates that we will have sufficient S/N for our purposes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. No special scheduling requirements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. No special calibration exposures required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Additional comments or special requests. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. FOC GTO data. Co-Is have some GO data too. Proposal 1057 (OS/GTO) is rather similar. Many (>20) FOC GTO publications. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10. Resources to be supplied by investigator's institution(s). STScI/ESA provides a SUN workstation and software tools for data reduction. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
