Abstract This proposal has several objectives. First, the imaging data will be used to determine the precise positions of the centers of the galaxies, to see if the central region is bright enough to do long slit spectroscopy with the FOC f/48 spectrograph, and finally to study the radial intensity and color profile in the spectral region between 2200A and 4500A. In addition, f/288 data will be obtained in those few cases where it is warranted by the f/96 exposures. The spectroscopy will be attempted only in the cases where the central region is bright enough to determine a good velocity dispersion. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Two exposures are requested: (1) a 360s F430W ACQ exposure followed by (2) a 240m long-slit spectroscopic exposure using G450M. The ACQ is an INT ACQ image for the follow-up spectroscopy, for which an ORIENT of 22D +/- 5D is requested. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. 64% of the observing time for this project is to be charged to P. Crane's guaranteed time. 36% of the observing time for this project is to be charged to I.R. King's guaranteed time.
