Abstract The FOS will be used with small apertures to map the stellar velocity dispersion and rotation in the central 1" of NGC4486, NGC4472 and NGC6251. The velocity dispersion maps will be used to discriminate between the large M/Ls required by massive black holes, velocity anisotropy, and isothermal velocity distributions. We will obtain FOS spectra of M87 at a grid of positions in order to measure the velocity dispersion. Lines 404-422 define a grid on the sky. There should be only one GSACQ for this whole sequence to preserve the registration of the grid. The target is acquired by direct ACQ/BINARY + ACQ/PEAK on the nucleus. Each science exposure is followed by a WAVE cal. A velocity dispersion standard F193 is observed for calibration. The target is observed centered and stepped to offset locations within the science apertures. ANY CHANGES TO THIS PROGRAM MUST HAVE SIGNED APPROVAL BY THE PI OR HIS DESIGNEE. This program is an integrated investigation of nuclear dynamics in elliptical galaxies and will not be complete until all observations of NGC 4486 and NGC 4472 have been obtained.
