Principal Investigator Institution Country Telephone Dr. Holland C. Ford SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INST USA (410) 338-4803 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Abstract WF/PC narrow band images will be used to isolate clouds near the nucleus and to look for organized structure such as disks, bubbles, and jets. FOS spectrophotometry from 1200A to 7000A will be used to establish density, temperature, chemical composition, ionization mechanisms, and reddening in the emission regions near the nucleus. Line profiles and radial velocities will be used to investigate broadening mechanisms near the nucleus such as turbulence, gas flows, and rotation. Small aperture FOS spectra of the nuclei will be used to separate the broad line region from the narrow line region. The spectra will be used to investigate physical conditions and gas dynamics in the broad line region. Absorption lines in the nuclear spectra will be used to measure the amount and distribution of gas along the line of sight through the parent galaxy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Ford SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE USA INSTITUTE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. We will obtain WFPC2 images of NGC4151 and NGC4261 as specified in the exposure logsheet. For each target all exposures should be obtained at the same pointing and roll angle. CR-SPLITs should be as specified, normally 0.333 (2:1) for long exposures to maximize dynamic range, and upsplit for short exposures. NGC4151 and NGC4261 should be placed at the PC1 aperture location. ANY CHANGES TO THIS PROGRAM MUST HAVE SIGNED APPROVAL BY THE PI OR HIS DESIGNEE. Cycle 4: 401-422 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests - All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets - 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields - 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry - 1st visit of bright targets All WF/PC imaging with a center wavelength blueward of 5000 Angstroms requires UV flood ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. This is an integrated program to study the morpholgy, dynamics, and ionization of the narrow line region in Type 1 and Type 2 Seyfert galaxies. The program will not be complete until 7 of the 12 Seyferts have been observed. Data release should not begin until one year after the seventh Seyfert has been completed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. WF/PC images will be used to study the structure of the narrow line region (NLR) in low redshift Seyferts. FOS spectra will used to establish physical conditions, chemical composition, ionization mechanisms and dynamics of individual clouds in the NLR. Small-aperture spectra of the nucleus will be used to isolate the broad line region (BLR) and to study physical condition and gas motion in the BLR. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
