Abstract WF/PC narrow band images of M87 will be used to isolate emission line regions near the nucleus and jet. FOS spectra of these clouds will be used to i) map the velocity field near the nucleus, ii) understand physical conditions and ionization mechanisms in these clouds, and iii) measure chemical composition of the clouds. FOS spectra of the stellar nucleus and synchotron knots in the jet will be used to establish long- base-line spectral indices and to look for spectral features. Long exposure ultraviolet spectra of the nucleus and jet will be used to look for absorption lines from M87's hot corona. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. We will obtain WFPC2 images of M87 as specified in the exposure logsheet. All exposures should be obtained at the same pointing and roll angle. CR-SPLITs should be o.333 (2:1) to maximize dynamic range. The target should be placed at the PC1 aperture location. ANY CHANGES TO THIS PROGRAM MUST HAVE SIGNED APPROVAL BY THE PI OR HIS DESIGNEE. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests - All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets - 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields - 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry - 1st visit of bright targets All WF/PC imaging with a center wavelength blueward of 5000 Angstroms requires UV flood ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. This is an integrated scientific program investigating the jet and nucleus of M87, and will not be complete until 80% of the observations have been obtained. Data release should not begin until 1 year after the 80% completion point. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13. WF/PC narrow band images and FOS spectra will be used to isolate emission line regions, measure their velocities, and establish physical conditions and chemical compositions in the gas. FOS spectra of the nucleus and jet will establish their spectral energy distributions from the UV to the optical.
