Abstract Try to understand the energies of normal galactic nuclei. Are the main sources of ionizing radiation nonthermal, or due to a blue stellar population? High spatial resolution of ST is essential to this problem; FOS spectra can distinguish between a population of hot young stars or HB stars. Use the 0.3" aperture at any central point sources and off nucleus at the appropriate spot determined from WFPC data. We will obtain WFPC2 images of NGC224 centered on the PC1 aperture using the F656N filter for the H-ALPHA image and using the F547M filter for the continuum image. The total exposure time for the CR-SPLIT exposure through the F656N filter should be 3600s, and the total exposure time for the CR-SPLIT exposure through the F547M filter should be 1200s. The F656N and F547M exposures should have a CR-SPLIT of 0.5. All exposures should be obtained at the same spacecraft position and roll angle, and should be scheduled GROUP NO GAP. The SV prerequisite programs for all FOS observations in this program are: Prop ID 2195 FOS Target Acquisition Tests - All observations Prop ID 1317 Int./Ext. Wavelength Offsets - 1st target Prop ID 1318 Spectral Flat Fields - 1st target Prop ID 1320 Absolute Spectrophotometry - 1st visit of bright targets All WF/PC imaging with a center wavelength blueward of 5000 Angstroms requires UV flood ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 12. This program does not become a viable scientific investigation until observations are complete on at least 5 of the 7 targets.
