Abstract Deep high latitude observations will be made with the WFPC2 in order to study cosmology using as probes: the clustering of galaxies, galaxy counts as a function of magnitude, evolution of the galaxy luminosity function, evolution of galaxy colors, galaxy morphology, and the distribution of galaxies in redshift. The observations consist of a strip of 28 overlapping WFC exposures with the wide I and V filters. It is assumed that the observations will occur when the target is opposite the Sun and the strip is oriented so that at the nominal roll for this date, the WFPC2 fields overlap in a chevron pattern. These exposures will also be useful for star count studies bearing on galactic structure. This program is the combined GTO time of Groth and Schroeder and is coordinated with a WFPC1 GTO program. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. Description of proposed observations. The observations are a strip of WFPC2 fields. The target fields are at ecliptic longitude 180 degrees so the optimum date to observe is March 21. The orientation of the strip has the same position angle as the nominal roll on this date. Adjacent fields are displaced by 91.9239 arcseconds in the V3 direction. This causes the fields to overlap in a chevron pattern with 10 arcseconds of overlap along the edges of the WFC chips. The exposures are 4400 seconds long, in I and 2800 seconds long in V but are divided into four non-cr-split exposures of 1100 and 700 seconds. The CR problem is expected to be more severe for WFPC2 than WFPC1, and it is believed that CR splitting a single 4400 second exposure into two 2200 second exposures will not provide good enough faint CR rejection. It is intended that one I and one V exposure be done each orbit so that a there are a total of 4 orbits per field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. An "average" galaxy (as opposed to a dominant cluster galaxy) has a core radius of only several hundred parsecs and falls off rapidly beyond the core. A core radius this small is unresolved (even by the HST) for distant galaxies. As long as the core radius is on the order of or smaller than a resolution element, the signal to noise is contributed almost entirely by the central pixel (even though most of the light is at larger radii). This is because the total light goes up with logarithm of the radius, but the total background light goes up with the square of the radius. Thus the ST will be unsurpassed for detecting "average galaxies" which are just the kind of galaxies required to perform statistical and correlation studies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. There are no real time requirements. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Specific rolls has been requested in order to optimize the overlap of the WFPC2 fields along the strip (with random rolls, there could be cases with no overlap). The rolls given in the ORIENT special requirement are the position angle of the U3 axis with respect to the equinox 2000.0 north pole. Dark time has been requested in order to provide the maximum signal to noise for faint objects with a given exposure time. A day of observation has been chosen so that the observations will occur at very low Zodiacal light brightnesses when dark time is maximized. Un-interrupted exposures are necessary in order to minimize the WFC readout noise. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8.
