First priority targets may be line_4: advantageously selected from the observing program of the ESA HIPPARCOS line_5: satellite. HIPPARCOS will provide high precision individual parallaxes to line_6: distances of 150 pc and significantly improved group parallaxes to 500 pc. line_7: Added on targets will be the few binaries detected by lunar occultations, in line_8: the separation range 10 to 570 milliarcseconds (mas). We are proposing to line_9: perform astrometric measurements of 5 T Tauri stars and 5 Ae/Be Herbig line_10: objects, by means of the HST Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) in the TRANS mode. The line_11: FGS will unveil their possible duplicity in the range 0".1 down to 10 mas. From line_12: FGS measured orbits, period and eccentricity distributions will be derived, and line_13: via accurate parallaxes the sum of the masses can be directly determined. The line_14: HST FGS is unique for carrying out the proposed research insofar lunar line_15: occultations are not generally available and provide angular separation in the line_16: occultation direction only; speckle interferometry is severely limited in line_17: angular resolution for large magnitude differences between the binary line_18: components. These observations will also serve as critical test cases for line_19: the HIPPARCOS double stars reductions. This is a Long-Term proposal. line_20: DELETED LINES 1,3,4,6-11 FROM 3688 TO CREATE THIS PROPOSAL ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BARBARO fname: GUIDO title: PROF. mi: A. inst: DIPARTIMENTO DI ASTRONOMIA DELL'UNIVERSITA' DI PADOVA country: ITALY esa: Y ! lname: BASTIAN fname: ULRICH title: DR. inst: ASTRONOMISCHEN RECHEN-INSTITUT country: GERMANY esa: Y ! lname: BUCCIARELLI fname: BEATRICE title: DR. inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA esa: Y ! lname: LATTANZI fname: MARIO title: DR. mi: G. inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA esa: Y ! lname: PANNUNZIO fname: RENATO title: DR. inst: OSSERVATORIO ASTRONOMICO DI TORINO country: ITALY esa: Y ! lname: BADIALI fname: MASSIMO title: DR. inst: ISTITUTO DI ASTROFISICA SPAZIALE DEL CNR, FRASCATI country: ITALY esa: Y ! lname: MAMMANO fname: AUGUSTO title: PROF. inst: UNIVERSITA' DI MESSINA country: ITALY esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block !
