Abstract After blind-pointing to the center of Jupiter, GHRS G160M spectra from 140 to 159 nm plus a single G200M setting at 178 nm, will be obtained. Since the sub-Earth latitude is approximately -2.8 degrees during the probable execution period (June 2, 1993), the observed region will be nearly zonally uniform, free from recent (early March) activity in the South Equatorial Belt and from stratospheric plumes to the north. The planet will rotate under the HST aperture as the spectra are acquired. The resultant spectrum will represent the zonal average spectrum at that latitude, at nearly unit local air mass. The spectrum will be analyzed for compositional information and vertical structure, using CO and C2H2 as probes. At these wavelengths, NH3 will not be important. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8. GENERAL FORM Proposal 4966c PI: John J. Proposers: Proposers Institution Country ESA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ John J. Caldwell YORK UNIVERSITY CANADA ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. The acquisition will be by blind pointing at the center of Jupiter The actual target is therefore about -2.8 deg (South), which is the sub-Earth latitude, where Jupiter is nearly zonally uniform. Recent (March/93) activity in the SEB is to the south, and the well known stratospheric plumes are northward. Planetary motion and parallax will be tracked during the spectroscopic exposures, but there will be NO tracking of planetary rotation. Jupiter will rotate under the the aperture as the data are taken. The result will be a zonally- averaged spectrum from 147 to 178 nm, at nearly unit local air mass. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The HST is required for access to the ultraviolet. IUE data are insufficient to obtain the desired spectral information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. IUE spectra provide good estimates of exposure times. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. HST spectra will be divided by published solar rocket spectra, to construct an albedo spectrum, which will be analyzed for abundance and vertical distribution information on various minor and trace species in the atmosphere of Jupiter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
